Howard VonNessen Obituary

ARLINGTON -- The burial office for Mr. Howard C. VonNessen was celebrated from St. James Episcopal Church on Thursday afternoon, with the Rev. Molly Comeau officiating. Assisting was Marilyn King, who was the crucifer and offered the Old Testament reading.

The service opened with the congregation, accompanied by organist Rebecca Sampson, singing “O, God Our Help in Ages Past,” the hymn of praise was “On Eagles’ Wings.” Senior Warden Judith Brower read words of remembrance and inspiration in the form of a letter from church pastor the Rev. Bradford Clark, who was unable to attend. Psalm 121 was recited in unison by the congregation. The service concluded with the congregation singing “Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee.”

Burial followed in the family lot in Evergreen Cemetery, with the Rev. Comeau offering the committal prayers. Military honors were provided by members of the American Legion Post 69 of Arlington, under the direction of Chaplain Fred Sheldon; the taps and echo were sounded by bugler Maurice Rancourt.

On Wednesday evening at the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home, members of Masonic Lodge 63 held services in honor of Mr. VonNessen. The service was led by Master Randy Novotny and Chaplain Donald Brown. Members of Eastern Star Chapter 41 also held their services; taking part in the service were Sue DeMarsico, Maylene Mort, Natalie Caler, Dale Bacon-Wood, Debbie Stone, Irene Novotny, Donna Masterson, Kathy Cotrofeld and J. William Cotrofeld.

Mr. VonNessen, a resident of Ball Mountain Road, died Feb. 26, 2005 at the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center.

Arrangements were under the care of the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home, Arlington Chapel.
