Alfred Newman Obituary

Alfred Joseph Newman

1930 - 2013 PITTSFIELD Korean War veteran Al Newman, 82, of Springside of Pittsfield Long Term Care Facility died Saturday evening there with his wife and daughter by his side.

Born in Winthrop, on July 27, 1930, he was the son of Alfred Cyril Newman and Gertrude Wilot Newman. Al was a 1948 graduate of Pittsfield High School.

He entered the Navy in 1951 with eight of his Wahconah All-Stars teammates and served from 1951 through 1954 as a hospital corpsman, third class, in Newport Rhode Island and aboard the USS Salamonie.

He worked as woodworker at Beloit Jones, retiring in 1997 after 40 years of service.

His passions were family and sports.

Al played basketball for five years in the Pittsfield Boys' Club Senior League and on the Wahconah Merchants team, coached by his father. He was chosen for the Boys Club Berkshire County all-tournament team in 1949 and was asked to participate in a tryout at the Polo Grounds for the New York Giants baseball team. Al loved to hike on all the mountains in Berkshire County with his dog, Major, and loved Greylock Mountain particularly.

Al was a long-time mentor of youth for basketball and baseball teams from the 1950s through the 1990s. Along with teaching the sporting aspects of the games, he also taught the children he coached life skills and integrity. In addition, he helped raise his nieces and nephews, instilling the values of sporting conduct during games and in life.

He leaves his wife, Susan, whom he married in 1979; daughter, Dorothy Mack, and grandchildren, Noah and Hailey Rose Mack. Al also leaves two sisters, Linda Slonski and Ruth McMahon, both of Pittsfield; one brother, Joseph Newman of Maine; eight nieces and nephews, Kathy Johnson, William McMahon, Larry McMahon, Lorrie McMahon, Andrew and Shannon McMahon, Paul Newman, Michael Newman, Amy Slonski and Jennifer Wojtkowski; and many great nieces and nephews.

FUNERAL NOTICE: Funeral services for Al Newman who died June 29, 2013, will be held Saturday, July 6, 2013, at 9 a.m. at St. Mark Church celebrated by the Rev. John Salatino, pastor.
