Helen M. Powell

1923-2013 PITTSFIELD Helen M. Powell, 90, of 8 Egremont Avenue in Pittsfield died Saturday at home.

Born on January 29, 1923 in Kokomo, Indiana she was the daughter of the late John and Nancy Holder Matau. A longtime Pittsfield resident, she was educated in Kokomo schools and was a 1941 graduate of Kokomo High School. She also graduated in 1942 from the Kokomo Business College. Furthering her studies, she graduated in 1961 from the Famous Artists School in Westport, Conn. She earned her associate's degree from Berkshire Community College in 1973 and her Bachelor of Arts degree in 1976 from the University of Massachusetts.

A homemaker, she was also a licensed Real Estate Broker.

She was a member of St. George Greek Orthodox Church and a member of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution Peace Party Chapter. She was a member of Beta Sigma Phi Society International and the Preceptor, Eta Chapter.

She enjoyed genealogy and published "Matau Family and Related Lineages". She leaves her son; Bruce M. Powell and his wife Margaret of Pittsfield; two grandsons David Powell and Micah Powell both of Pittsfield; and six great grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her brother, the late Dennis G. Matau.

FUNERAL NOTICE: Funeral services for Helen M. Powell, who died February 23, 2013, and her late husband, Jack A. Powell, who died March 7, 2008, will be held Friday, March 1, at 2 p.m., at St. George Greek Orthodox Church with Rev. John G. Maheras, Protopresbyter, officiating. Burial will follow in Pittsfield Cemetery. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Helen may be made to St. George Greek Orthodox Church in care of the DERY FUNERAL HOME, 54 Bradford Street, Pittsfield, MA 01201.
