Shirley Davis Obituary

Shirley Davis went home to be with the Lord on November 6, 2023. Affectionately also referred to as Mom, Sittu, Aunt Shirl, or "The UNO Lady", Shirley was a spirited matriarch, a fountain of stories, and a tireless volunteer. Her door was always open and her kitchen table was where she would share the history of her beloved city, a cup of coffee, and the Lebanese food she loved to cook. It was also where she wrote her cookbook "Sittu Shirl's Favorite Recipes" and the original meeting place for the United Neighborhood Organization which she grew with the help of the community, donor Jack Wadsworth, and many team members who shared her passion. The UNO center, the UNO playground, and her cookbook will remain legacies of Shirley's love for the place she called home for 70 years.

Born in North Adams on January 17, 1935 to the late John and Anna (Morin) David she attended local schools and graduated from Drury High School in the class of 1952. Shirley worked briefly for Sprague Electric Company until she married and started a family with Louie, the love of her life. She gave of her time most generously without expecting anything in return. Her volunteerism for many organizations led to her receiving the Women's of Achievement award from the Northern Berkshire Professional Women's organization among many other honors. Her love for her community was second only to her love of her family who surrounded her up to the moment of her passing.

Shirley is survived by her son, Robert Davis (Pauline Gertje); daughter Barbara Davis-Hassan (Kenneth); son James Davis (Tammy) and daughter Susan Davis (Ian Warren), her cherished grandchildren Angela, Melissa, Matthew, James, Mallory, Michael, Joseph, Daniel and Thomas and great-grandchildren Penelope, Gwendolyn, Noah, Caleb, Delilah, Evan, Annabelle, Poppy, Benjamin, Mason, Ava, Louis and honorary granddaughter Emily. She also leaves her nephews Richard Davis (Kathy) and James Davis, nieces Donna Garner and Lorraine Niles, and her dear friend Beverly Cable who checked on Shirley throughout the years. She was predeceased by her husband Louie, brother Raymond David, her daughter Judith Davis, and her beloved daughter-in-law Vickie Agan.

The family extends their gratitude and love to those who took such wonderful care of Shirley during her long and courageous battle with Alzheimer's. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Alzheimer's Association in her name.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday, November 20, 2023 at 11:00 AM at St. Elizabeth of Hungary Parish, 70 Marshall Street, North Adams followed by burial at Southview Cemetery. Calling hours will be held from 4:00 - 7:00 PM on Sunday, November 19 at Flynn-Dagnoli-Montagna-WEST CHAPEL, 521 West Main Street, North Adams. When we were young, my Mom, Dad, and Jimmy would drive up to N. Adams to see all the Davis relatives on Thanksgiving. This was a special time for all of us. Thanksgiving at Aunt Shirley and Uncle Louie´s house was incredible, not just because Aunt Shirley was an amazing cook, but the love, fun , and laughter we shared was priceless. My first cousins were like brothers and sisters to me, not just cousins. Aunt Shirley will be missed! She is the last of the great aunts and uncles of our mutual families. Kathy and I are sending our love, thoughts, prayers and condolences to all of our cousins at this sad time.

Barbara, May God assuage any anguish that you may have and leave you only with the memorable times you had together.

May your hearts be lightened by the wonderful memories you all share. Grieving is necessary but also is celebrating a life well lived. Rest in peace my friend.
