LODGE GRASS - Amy Bright Wings Red Star, Iikua Biluxbakush "Self Reliant," 92, matriarch of the Bright Wings, Dust and Covers Up families of Lodge Grass passed away Jan. 16, 2013, in the Big Horn County Memorial Hospital.
She was born June 20 1920, in Lodge Grass, daughter of William Dust and Mussette Grace Bright Wings. Her mother died at an early age, her grandparents, Maria and Bright Wings, raised Amy. She grew up in the No Water area and attended St. Ann's School, last surviving student. Amy attended schools in Wyola, St. Xavier, and St. Katherine's in Great Falls. She excelled in tennis and played the saxophone.
Amy married Wallace Red Star Sr., in September of 1938 and made their home in Pryor and Lodge Grass. She was an excellent seamstress, who specialized in Crow Traditional clothing and embellished items with beautiful beadwork. Her outfits were created for hand games, Sun dances and other Crow ceremonies. She was given the right to make Elk tooth dresses and Crow necklaces. Amy, was a very generous person, taking in many children who now call her Mom. She loved to travel all over to Pow-wows.
She was an associate of Jehovah Witnesses, a member Piegan Clan and was a Big Lodge child. Amy was a Tobacco Society member, who was given the sacred Tobacco Society Medicine bundle from her mother Maria Bright Wings.
Her parents; husband; sons, Palmer and Wendell; daughters Wynne and Lani; adopted sons Leland Rock, Earl Biss, Leland Walking Bear and Troy Whiteman; sisters Leona Morning, Virginia, Martha and Edna Dust; brothers Henry Bright Wings, Sr., Louis "Tex" Good Luck, Clive Dust Sr. and Trask Little Light; nieces Irene Bright Wings Hill, Veronica Dust, Andrea Good Luck, Nora Bird and Dorothy Sun Goes Slow; grandchildren James Young, Tory Red Star III and Merida Red Star Miller, preceded Amy in death.
Survivors include her daughters Kaneeta Red Star, Redstar (Kelly) Price, Walla (Max) Spotted Bear, Ardith (Clifford) Bird in Ground, Virginia Covers Up, Anita Stevens Schufflebine and Robin (Klaus) Richter; her sons, Kevin, Aaron (Susan), Marlon (Chrislyn) and Wallace (Molly) Red Star Jr. and Steven (Violet) Bird; nieces, Celeste Tobacco, Victoria (Myron) Falls Down, Vianna (Dennis) Stewart, Kathleen (Clinton) White Clay, Terry (Danny) Brien, Aldeen, Claudine, Tonya Dust, Justine Sun Goes Slow, Henrietta (James) Takes Horse, Maria (Gerald) Pease, Flavina (Kirby) Bromley, Aneda Hill, Joyce Good Luck, Lavonne Spotted Horse, Arbutus Covers Up, Serena Old Bull, Roberta Morning, Lenora (Arthur) Plenty Hawk, Shirleen (Gilbert) Glenn, Irma Jane Bird Hat, Annette Bird and Delberta Owns Pipe; nephews Garfield Little Light, Curtis and Gordon Morning, Byron, Dean and Dana Bird, Clive Jr., Issac, Victor, Joseph and Kevin Dust, Henry (Daisy) Jr. and Darrell (Barbara) Bright Wings, Maynard and Dean (Lydia) Hill, Fred LaBeau, Steve (Kathy) Lehmer, Delbert and Rick Owns Pipe, Louis (Alda), Clinton and John Good Luck; 25 grandchildren; 39 great grandchildren; three great great grandchildren; her adopted sons, Bernard (Deliah) Covers Up, Jerome (Lois) White Hip, Larry (Rhoda) Bright Wings, Tilton (Sarah) Old Bull, Greg Olsen of Princeton, New Jersey and John (Virgileen) Dust Sr.; as well as her extended family including the Bright Wings, Gros Ventre, Old Bull, Half, Plain Lefthand, Hunts Arrow, Bear Ground, Dust, Moccasin, Covers Up, Bird Hat, Peters, Williamson, Greybull, Bird Far Away, Alden, Stands Over Bull, Beads/Don't Mix, Agnes Holds family, Gros Ventre families, Crow Flies High, Drags Wolf, Fox, Smith, Bird, Four Bears, Baker, Birdsbill, and Wicker.
Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Monday, in the Bullis Funeral Chapel. Interment will follow in the Lodge Grass Cemetery. Bullis Mortuary has been entrusted with the arrangements.
