LAME DEER - Elva Stands in Timber, 83, of Lame Deer, passed away Nov. 26, 2011, in the Billings Clinic.
Eseamehee'e "Day Walking Woman" was born April 21, 1928, in Lame Deer, a daughter of John and Josie One Bear Stands in Timber. She was raised in the Lame Deer area and received her education in Lame Deer and at the St. Labre Mission School. During her younger years, she took part in rodeos and Pow-wows. She was a Cheyenne buckskin dancer, who was known for her knowledge of singing traditional songs. She assisted in numerous sun dances and piercing ceremonies.
Elva married Joseph Fire Crow Sr., and to this union 10 children were born. They later divorced. She married Harvey Whiteman and the couple later divorced. She married Burton Fisher Sr. and the couple adopted Francis Old Dwarf. The couple later divorced.
She was a member of the Catholic Church, War Bonnet Women and was a sister of the Crazy Dog Society.
Her parents, daughter Shiela Timentwa, sister Josephine Glenmore, brothers Burton, John Gilbert and John Stands in Timber Jr., Ivan Small, Sr. and grandson Omero Firecrow preceded Elva in death.
Survivors include her daughters Josephine, Marion, Louella and Alvina Firecrow Adeline Fox and Joann M. Moore; her sons Ira, Joseph, Ron, John, Ivan Lee Firecrow, Ambrose Goeller, Phillippe Franquelin and Francis Old Dwarf; her brothers, Emmett Stands in Timber and Fr. Peter Powell; 20 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; her nephew Benji Bearchum; her remaining numerous nieces, nephews, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; as well as her extended family including the Glenmore, Crazy Mule, Bearchum, Ivan Small family, and One Bear families. We have a large family, if we have forgotten anyone please accept our apology.
We wish to thank the ICU nurses and staff at the Billings Clinic, including Amber Means and Dr. William Hernandez; and the NCAS staff including Sandy Bruised Head and Jamie Whiteman.
Wake services will be held 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Lame Deer Mennonite Church. Funeral mass will be celebrated 11 a.m. Thursday Dec. 1, in the Lame Deer Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. Interment will follow in the Lame Deer Cemetery. Bullis Mortuary has been entrusted with the arrangements.
