Robert Smith Obituary

Robert Alan Smith, 60, of Billings, passed away March 11, 2014. His big old heart just gave out.

He was born Aug. 26, 1953, in Miles City, the oldest of six children to Gerald and Helen Smith. As a youngster, Bob was a prankster, as his siblings will tell you. He excelled at school and enjoyed learning. His love of reading is evident in his vast library of books.

In 1967, the family moved from Miles City to Billings, where Bob started school at Lewis and Clark and West High School. He joined NJROTC, dedicating himself to the Navy. Upon graduating in 1972, he entered into Basic Training in Long Beach, Calif.

He served in Vietnam on the USS Ramsey, where his brother Corby joined him one year later. Bob was honorably discharged from the Navy in 1975. He signed up for the Naval Reserve, which he served in for 20 years.

Bob attended Vo-Tech and took small engine, diesel and power train classes.

In 1985, he began his career at Great Western Sugar, where he dedicated 28 years of service.

He was a member of Teamsters Union 190 and the Sheriff's Association. Bob was a Shriners donor, dedicated Navy man and selfless friend and co-worker. Bob was loved by all who knew him. His loyalty and generosity were unmatched. He loved to work and died doing what he loved.

He was preceded in death by his father, Gerald, and his mother, Helen.

He is survived by two brothers, Corby (Debbie) Smith and Darin Smith, all of Billings; three sisters, Sheryl Smith Elmore (Robert) of Starkville, Miss., Darcy Darnielle (Mike Gray) of Billings, and Jodi Smith (Paul Mack) of Helena; four nieces, Valerie, Heather, Gerianna and Darinda; two nephews, Devin and Thaddeaus; and numerous uncles, aunts and cousins. He was a great-uncle to Arlen, Drayk and Shaylee. He will be truly missed.

Memorial service will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday, March 17, at Smith Downtown Chapel, 925 N. 27th St. Cremation has taken place.

From Darcy's heart: My brother, my friend, my world has a major void in it now that you are gone. I am going to miss you! In so, so many ways. Western Sugar lost the best d**n Sugar Boiler ever!! We all love you, Bob! Forever in my heart.
