Sylvania Guttormson Obituary
Wake services are scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 15, at the Adams Memorial Chapel in Malta. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 16, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, with burial following in the Malta Cemetery. Adams Funeral Home and Crematory of Malta is in charge of arrangements.
Sylvia was born Aug. 31, 1915, at Bird Island, Minn., the seventh of 15 children to George and Applonia (Neumann) Schulte. In 1934, she graduated from St. Mary's High School at Bird Island, and in 1937, graduated from St. Joseph School of Nursing at St. Catherine's College in St. Paul, Minn. She nursed in St. Paul and Bird Island, where she assisted in many, many home deliveries. Sylvia loved assisting in delivering babies. She joined the U.S. Army during WWII and met her husband, Oscar J. Guttormson, and they married Aug. 3, 1944, at Champagne Chapel in Fort Warrren, Wyo. She served with the 373rd General Hospital in Island of Guam. She left the U.S. Army as a First Lieutenant and came to Montana in 1945 where she ranched and nursed until her retirement in the late 1980s.
Survivors include two daughters, Mary (Dick) Cosgriffe of Prineville, Ore., and Kaja Guttormson of Portland, Ore.; two grandchildren, Kipp (Missy) Cosgriffe of Clackamas, Ore., and Addie (Monte) Demaris of Depoe Bay, Ore.; two great-grandchildren, Perry and Karly Cosgriffe; two sisters; many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Oscar Guttormson, Dec. 27, 1998; son, John Guttormson, Aug. 19, 1973; and 12 brothers and sisters.

It was a priviledge to have worked with Sylvia for more than 39 years. Her dedication to nursing was second to none as well as her advice to her friends. God Bless!

Mary and Kaja: Your mother was great. In 1960 or 1961 she helped students at St Mary's with their reading. My son, Dan was one of those she helped and it did wonders for him. Thank you,Sylvania.
