Nancy Holt

Nancy Parker Holt, age 90, died on March 23, 2014 after a brief hospitalization. She is survived by three sons and a daughter: Mack P. Holt and wife Margaret of Woodbridge, Virginia; Stephen M. Holt and wife Carmela of Pelham, Alabama; Philip J. Holt and wife Mary of Tucker, Georgia; and Nancy Holt Black and husband Stanley Black of Madison, Mississippi. She is also survived by eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband of fifty-five years, Roy Mack Holt of Pensacola, Florida, her parents Daisy Kidd Parker and Julius Monroe Parker, and two sisters, Daisy Parker Flory and Mary Parker Burnett. Nancy was born in Pineville, Kentucky in 1923 and raised in Tallahassee, Florida. She graduated from Leon High School in 1941 and Florida State College for Women in 1945. She also received a Masters of Christian Education from the Teacher's College of the Southern Baptist Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky in 1947. She married Roy Mack Holt in 1948, living in Nashville and Memphis, before moving to Atlanta in 1952, where she was secretary at First Baptist Church before becoming Director of Financial Aid at Southern School of Pharmacy. When the family transferred their memberships to Second Ponce de Leon Baptist Church in Atlanta in 1962, she also became very active in Sunday School and Women's Missionary Union activities. The Holt family moved to Birmingham in 1968, where she attended the University of Alabama in Birmingham to obtain certification in learning disorders and taught in the Birmingham Public Schools for sixteen years. She and Roy were active at Mountain Brook Baptist Church in the Friendship Class, she was a faithful choir member and ordained a life deacon on January 7, 1990. In retirement Nancy enjoyed travelling to Europe, Alaska, the Holy Land, and China; and she also developed a keen interest in her family's genealogy and became active in the Daughters of the American Revolution. A memorial service will be at Mountain Brook Baptist Church on Thursday, March 27 at 11:00 a.m., preceded by visitation at 10:00 a.m. The family wishes to thank the support of her Sunday school class and caregivers and sitters at Brookdale where she lived for the last two years.
