Thomas LeCroy Obituary

Thomas Gail LeCroy Oct. 30, 1946 - Feb. 4, 2023 Thomas Gail LeCroy, M.D., died on February 4, 2023. He was born October 30, 1946, to Thomas Roscoe LeCroy and Margaret Goolsby LeCroy. He is survived by his wife of fifty-one years, MaryWills Hatfield LeCroy; two daughters, MaryBeth Mardis-LeCroy (Matt), Kemper H. L. Florin (Todd); grandchildren Ellie Mardis-LeCroy, Wills Mardis-LeCroy, Calvin Mardis-LeCroy, Nate Florin; and Lucas Florin; as well as many cousins, aunts, and uncles. He grew up in Carnesville, GA, graduated as valedictorian from Franklin County High School (GA), and from Atlanta's Emory University, where he met his future wife. He received an M.S. degree in microbiology from Georgia State University, and his M.D. from Emory School of Medicine. He pursued a psychiatric residency at Eisenhower Medical Center, Fort Gordon, GA. While in the army, he served as Chief, Mental Health Services, 1st Infantry Div. (Mech), then as Chief, Mental Health and Inpatient Services at Irwin Army Community Hospital, Fort Riley, KS. He received the Army Commendation Medal for his service at Ft. Riley, home of the Big Red One. He worked in private practice with Psychiatric Associates in Greenville, SC, where he also served as Medical Director of the Adult Inpatient Unit, Charter Hospital. He moved to Birmingham, AL, in 1999 to work with Alabama Psychiatric Services. Upon retirement from psychiatric practice, he worked at Social Security Disability Services in Birmingham until 2018. He was an avid reader and enjoyed gardening and travel. He was a supporter of the arts, especially music. A member of North Greenville Rotary Club in Greenville, SC, he was also an active member of several Presbyterian churches in different cities where he lived. Most recently, he served as elder and teacher at Independent Presbyterian Church of Birmingham. Tom was a cherished husband, son, father, grandfather and a caring friend to all. He leaves behind abundant sweet memories for those who knew and loved him. His daughters list gifts and life lessons received from their father. One says he gave her the gift of being listened to; when he listened, he always showed deep understanding. The other daughter says that, while encouraging excellence, he did not pressure her and would often say, "Do your best, and don't worry about the rest." The family is grateful for those who helped care for Tom, especially one long-time caregiver, Polly (Mary) Bonds. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM at Independent Presbyterian Church on February 18, 2023, with visitation at 10:00 AM; burial will be at Florence Cemetery in Florence, AL. In lieu of flowers, please consider a gift to Community Ministries at Independent Presbyterian Church, 3100 Highland Ave, S., Birmingham, AL 35205; or a gift to the UAB Alzheimer's Disease Research Fund, UAB Gift Records, AB 1230, 1720 2nd Avenue South, Birmingham, AL, 35294; or go to http://go.uab.edu/thomaslecroy; or, give to the charity of your choice.

Tom was a one-time partner (in Greenville, SC) and good friend. He was compassionate, a skilled clinician, and possessed a wonderful sense of humor. It was a privilege to call him a friend and colleague. My thoughts and prayers are extended to Tom´s family and friends.

I first met Gail when he was 13 years old. I know Carl thought of him as more of a little brother than a nephew! It was easy to see that he was an humble and gifted young man. I am sure he was welcomed in Paradise by many friends, patients, and family!!
