Richard E. Maier, 87, Bismarck, died June 15, 2014, at Sanford Health, Bismarck. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, June 20, at House of Prayer Lutheran Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. Dave Swonger officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens. With military honors provided by the Bismarck VFW Post No. 1326.
Visitation will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, with a prayer service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday.
Richard was born Dec. 16, 1926, to Phillip and Lydia (Klein) Maier in Mott. He was raised and educated in the Mott area. Richard entered the military June of 1945 and served until January of 1946. He married Doris Langshaw on July 28, 1950, in Bismarck.
Richard worked for Capital Electric Cooperative, started as a Lineman and at his retirement in 1989, he was a supervisor. He was a reserved man that put his family above all else. He enjoyed family gatherings during the holidays and special occasions. He also enjoyed growing flowers and vegetables which he would generously share with everyone. Richard liked playing pinochle, woodworking and in his earlier years camping and fishing.
Richard will be deeply missed by his daughters, Mary Jane Maier, Donna (Chris) Frey, Deborah Koch, Phyllis Lilly, Janet (Brian) Wallace, and Patricia (Brett) Behm, all of Bismarck; his son, Phillip, Colorado Springs, Colo.; 14 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren; his sisters, Leona (Leo) Baesler, New Leipzig, and Alvina Kautz, New Leipzig; his brother, John Maier, New Leipzig; and sister-in-law, Diane Maier, Mott.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Doris; a son-in-law, Frank Koch; his sisters, Alma Bierwagon, Martha Wolf, Hilda Golke and Lydia Luithle; and brother, Alvin Maier.
