Dancer
(A poem for Nan Keating)
I am my teacher's unending holler
swelling in the mist of uniform
wall, barré, and floor
the color of an overrun highway
broken by gray light
from large New England windows
It's like being under water
where the movement of one
evokes another.
She paddles and we move.
She slaps it making big waves
and we move faster.
Funneling across the room in tight
legged turns and twisted
mouths, chins tilted to the light.
She is rowing us
and she mounts the dull painted chair,
knees spread and opposing, eyes
stalking as we hang
in the air, climbing with toes and fingertips
stirring ingredients, desperate
for it to meld and embrace us,
guide us, perhaps then she will notice us,
ride us, rush over us,
and unify thought with reflex.

Dear Chris, Liz and Jen,
My family and I are so saddened to hear of your loss. Your mom was such a caring, thoughtful and generous individual for myself and so many others. We shared many good times as friends and neighbors and she had such a special presence in the lives of my daughters. She will be fondly remembered by us all as a very special person.
Our sincere condolences

Dear Nan was a wonderful colleague, mentor and loving friend. She will be greatly missed by many who have known and worked with her. She was always there for me to help and guide me along the way as I returned from living abroad to working with her at the Boston Ballet School in Norwell. Over the years I loved to see her joy while teaching and speaking about the young children who were fortunate to learn the art of ballet from her. She shared so openly, freely and joyfully about dance and her teaching techniques. Thank you, Nan, for your gift of friendship! You will always live in our hearts and prayers.
To your family, thinking of you with deep sympathy. May memories comfort you in your time of sorrow. -Donna Silva

Dear Chris, Liz and Jen - I can't tell you how sorry I was to hear of your mom's passing. She and ballet were such an impactful part of my life. I started ballet when I was 11 1/2 years old. Nan saw me in another teacher's class one day and took an interest in me. She provided a scholarship so that I could take more classes and groomed me to progress to pointe and classes at the Boston School of Ballet. Ballet became something to define and distinguish myself outside of school. A small, awkward girl with braces, ballet made me feel beautiful, graceful and athletic. CBW provided an instant group of wonderful friends who supported each other through the ups and downs of teenage social life, and who helped me get through my father's death when I was 13. Although I only danced for 4 1/2 years, my time at Children's Ballet Workshop was a defining aspect of my life that shaped who I became as a person and laid the foundation for overcoming challenges and reaching goals throughout my lifetime. I cannot imagine what my life would have been like had I never met Nan! 40 years later, I have recently found my way back to ballet classes and rediscovered the joy of those years. I am eternally grateful for all that Nan did for me! She was truly a gift to the world! Love, Deb

Nan was a fabulous woman and teacher. She was a big part of my daughter's life and because of Nan's amazing teaching, my daughter went on to dance professionally. I also got to know Nan, not just as a ballet parent, but a friend. I have wonderful memories of a trip to Maine with the Nutcracker dancers and her. Such a fun woman! She will be missed.
