CARL MUELLER Obituary

MUELLER, Carl Muth An extraordinarily full life – he did it all Carl Mueller died peacefully March 21st in his home at the Foxhill Village in Westwood, MA. Mr. Mueller lived at Foxhill since 2003 when he and his wife, Sue Mueller (deceased 2016), moved there from their longtime home in New York City's River House. The Muellers also maintained homes on Nantucket Island, first coming to the island with family in 1956. First-born son to Edna and Herman Mueller, young Carl grew up in Erie, PA. He was a strong student, finishing high school two years early. At his father's suggestion, he applied to and was accepted into MIT, beginning a lifetime relationship of learning and service to the Institute. Shortly after graduation (Phi Beta Kappa) in June of 1941, Mr. Mueller took stock of the darkening world situation and enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps. He served stateside throughout the war applying his considerable technical skills and expertise to outfitting America's warplanes built to win World War II. He ended his career as a Major in the spring of 1946. Moving to New York City, Carl thought about his future and in short order had a job at Bankers Trust where he began an outstanding finance career. At Bankers Trust, he used his technical insights to help and harness many 1950's oil patch development efforts. He knew the technical and engineering details of the oil business at least as well and often better than his oil company customers. This made for many great partnerships in the extractions industry. Alongside his burgeoning career, Mr. Mueller and his wife had a large family (most of the time in Ridgewood, New Jersey). Five children were born between 1949 and 1955. The household was full, summers soon were spent on Nantucket, and Mr. and Mrs. Mueller took on a number of responsibilities in their community: Valley Hospital for Mr. Mueller and the Ridgewood Public Library for Mrs. Mueller, among others. They were trusted by others with significant responsibilities Taking stock of his family obligations, Mr. Mueller left commercial banking at Bankers Trust for the investment bank Loeb Rhodes & Company in 1960. At Loeb Rhodes, Mr. Mueller worked within an illustrious partnership and expanded his reach into new industries and relationships. In time he became the Managing Partner of Loeb Rhodes and was elected to be the Securities Industry Association's Chair. Nothing lasts forever in the financial world, and in 1978, Mr. Mueller left Loeb Rhodes and returned to Bankers Trust, as Vice Chairman. There he, and the senior-most leadership team (Al Brittain, John Hannon and Charlie Sanford), successfully transformed the bank into a merchant bank and trading house. Mr. Mueller served on a number of corporate boards, Cabot Corporation, Capital Records, Ford Motor, and Philips Electronics to name a few. After retirement in 1985, Mr. Mueller was the Vice-Chair of New York-based AEA Investors. He also served as vice-chair of the Mt Sinai hospital board, was Commodore of the Nantucket Yacht Club in 1987 – 1988, and he was a valued member of the Carnegie Corporation's board for years. Throughout his life Mr. Mueller valued learning, bright people, hard work and worthy institutions. In that vein he was in the front row rooting for his wife in her work on the Wellesley College Board, as a board member of the New York Public Library and as an early mover with Nantucket's Land Council. The Muellers had previously donated land (Head of the Plains) for conservation on Nantucket in 1965. In a lifetime of service, Mr. Mueller notably provided 30 years of senior-level leadership to MIT as a member of the Institute's Corporation. Among many other roles he was a member of the Executive Committee from 1970 - 1990; chaired three presidential search committees; was on the Investment Committee from 1969 – 1990, chairing that group from 1975 – 1987. In 1990 MIT named Mr. Mueller as an Honorary Lecturer, previously awarded only to Cecil Green, Eugene McDermott and Winston Churchill. In 1995 he was made a lifetime member of the Institute's Corporation. As a longtime member of the Nantucket Yacht Club, and in time at the Larchmont Yacht Club as well, he combined his greatest passions, family and sailing. When the weather turned in the spring and on through the fall, he was most happy on a succession of boats, all named 'Sazie', with family members. Day sailing and the annual journeys to and from Larchmont and Nantucket provided an outlet for relaxation, adventure, and navigational skills. In their later years, Mr. and Mrs. Mueller enjoyed winter trips to Barbuda Island, continued their lifelong enjoyment of opera at the Met, Thanksgivings on Nantucket, and opening their homes to their children and grandchildren. This continued when they moved to Foxhill Village, still spending large chunks of time each year on Nantucket. In the spring of 2016 Mrs. Mueller passed away after a battle with Alzheimer's. Mr. Mueller stayed with her throughout, having played a leading role in creating the memory-care facility at Foxhill, just in time for his wife's challenges. He rallied as his 100th year came to its climax in the midst of the Covid pandemic, but father time finally tracked him down this year as March turned into spring. Mr. Mueller's surviving family – children Anne Redman, Fred Mueller (spouse Karen Mueller), Elizabeth Wales (spouse Karen Maeda Allman), Charles Mueller, Henry Mueller (spouse Gerilyn Brewer); grandchildren Tom Wales (spouse Laura Hoby), Jay Mueller (spouse Christine Caligtan), Alex Mueller, Amy Wales (spouse Erik Pearson) Ian Redman, Carreau Ryder (spouse Jon Ryder), Toby Mueller (spouse Mary Emanuel), Ross Mueller (spouse Laura Waters), Graham Redman, and Carl Mueller; and great-grands Lincoln & Gideon Mueller; Sonia and Joren Pearson; Henry & Thomas Ryder, Abby Mueller, and Kazie Mueller – though saddened by the passing of their patriarch, look forward to celebrating his memory every day: With his favorite phrase "Happy Day." The Mueller family will hold private services at a later date to remember Sue and Carl Mueller.

I worked for Carl, Joseph Gavin, and D. Reid Weedon, Jr. when they were on the Corporation Campaign Committee at M.I.T. Carl called me their den mother. Whenever he was volunteering for M.I.T., he said, “I am doing the Lord’s work. “ it was a pleasure to work for all three of them. Kathleen Minadeo Johnson
