Charles Palmer Obituary

Charles Cobb Palmer passed away on July 7, 2010 in Naples, Florida at the age of 75. Charlie was born in Boston and grew up in Brookline. A devoted and lifelong Red Sox fan, he spent many boyhood days at Fenway Park. Charlie was a graduate of Governor Dummer Academy and Middlebury College, where he participated in sports and other activities and served as President of the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity. Charlie's career in finance spanned more than 50 years in Boston as an investment advisor and stock broker and was characterized by his great passion for the securities markets, as well as by his meaningful relationships with clients and colleagues alike. At the time of his death he was a Senior Vice President at RBC Dain Rauscher. Charlie married his college sweetheart, Patricia Judah, in 1959. They lived most of their married life in Wellesley, where Charlie was a board member of Human Relations Service and enjoyed coaching youth hockey and his young daughters' soccer teams. His other volunteer efforts were primarily focused on various initiatives on behalf of Middlebury College, although interviewing prospective students for the admissions office was his favorite. He received both the Alumni Achievement Award and the Neuberger Cup for his contributions. In 2001 Middlebury College bestowed upon him an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters. Charlie was a member of the Wellesley Country Club for more than 40 years where he reveled in the camaraderie of special friends and staff. While not an avid golfer in recent years, in the past he played quite a bit of golf, as well as tennis and paddle tennis at the Club. Above all, Charlie was a "people person," making easy connections with nearly everyone he met – regardless of place, background or status – through his authenticity, curiosity and acceptance of all people, as well as through his genuine and contagious love of life. He was kind, open, and generous. So many of Charlie's friends and acquaintances refer to him as a "good guy," which is what Charlie himself always said that he aspired to be. Charlie is survived by his wife of 50 years, Pat, his daughters Susan Palmer and Sandy Lemon, their husbands Chris Jeffrey and Stephan Lemon, and his twin granddaughters Cricket and Samantha Lemon. He is also survived by his sister Judith Muggia, his brother E. Samuel Palmer, and his longtime business associate Rosalie Castellarin. Charlie was predeceased by his brother Robert M. Palmer. A family ceremony will be held privately. A public memorial reception to celebrate Charlie's life will be held at a date to be determined. Contributions may be made in his name in support of undergraduate financial aid at Middlebury College (c/o Gift Administration, Middlebury College, 5 Court Street, Middlebury, VT 05753), or to The Garden of Hope and Courage (1177 Third Street South, Naples, FL 34102), or to the charity of one's choice.

Not sure what to say?

Dear Pat, Sandy and Susan,
I just learned of Charlie's passing myself when Linda Ross notified me that Kirk was going to be used to honor him. I too have been here many years ( 25) and served some time on Staff Council and remember fondly my visits with Charlie and Pat. Though at one point I was simply a custodian, Charlie always made me feel very important as a human being and taught me to be proud of the job I did. I always looked forward to seeing him and Pat during their visits. He always had a charming tone and demeanor. I will always remember him with fondness.
My thoughts and prayers are with you all. If you need anything while in town, please let me know.
Take care,

Dear Pat, Sandy, and Susan,

I just learned of Charlie's passing when I was notified that there would be an event at Kirk in his memory during Homecoming.
I have worked at Middlebury for 30 plus years and I will have to say it is because of people like you folks that made me feel accepted and I knew Middlebury was a place I wanted to be for a long time. Our paths crossed many times during the past 30 years.

My thoughts and prayers are with each of you at what must be a difficult time.

I was truly saddened to learn of Charlies passing. He was the consumate "good guy" and a true fixture at Advest (where I met him in the 70's) and the brokerage community as well. He was a gentleman....and a gentle man...a rare combination.

He will be missed...
Respectfully,

Pat, my thoughts are with you. It's a credit to Charlie that although I only met him on a few occassions, I considered him a friend. He was warm and genuine and funny and kind. In other words, he was Charlie. I will miss him. Warmest regards, Sue Levine

Dear Susan and Family,
Claudia and I were so sorry to hear of Charlie's passing. We feel blessed to have had the chance, albeit brief, to get to know him at your fondue party. Charlie's genuine interest and open hearted acceptance of everyone around him, as well as his lively and good humored discussions of the Red Sox, Brookline and his days in college (including his courtship rituals!) endeared him to us immediately. We have often looked back on that party with fond memories, thanks in no small part to the presence Charlie and Pat. He was truly a great guy and we feel honored to have know him, even if for the briefest of moments.

Charlie and Pat, one of the most natural combinations I've ever known. Charlie was one of nature's delights. He was a warm, honest sweetheart of a guy and we count ourselves lucky to have known him.
Our very best wishes to you and your family, Pat.
Sincerely, Nancy and Bill McCormack
