DANIEL MULLIN Obituary

MULLIN, Daniel A. Boston's Renowned Real Estate Broker, Dies at 78 If you were friends with Dan Mullin, you had a best friend for life. He was a well-known Boston real estate agent renowned for creating lasting relationships and being a consummate host. He recently observed his 78th birthday with a virtual party of over 300 people sharing and celebrating with him. Bravely fighting cancer for six years, he weathered multiple complications and setbacks with a relentlessly optimistic attitude. Friends commented, "He was a shining star, so full of kindness, endless wit, knowledge, strong faith and absolute positivity all the way to the end." He led his life by example, supporting numerous charities and causes close to his heart: Fine Arts Work Center, AIDS Action, The Friends of Caritas Good Samaritan Hospice, Huntington Theater and numerous others. A friend to all, he relished making the acquaintance of a variety of people, ranging from author Ann Patchett, to the poet Mary Oliver, from Hillary Clinton to influential business leaders. Yet front and center of his life was always his extended family; his sister Joan Scheib & husband Frank, his sister-in-law Carol Mullin and partner Tim Sturtevant, his nine nieces & nephews and his 15 great-nieces & nephews; all whom he loved dearly. Daniel A. Mullin, born October 31, 1942 in Arlington, MA, was the youngest of five siblings and the youngest of 21 first cousins. He attended Boston College High School, College of the Holy Cross and then enlisted in the US Coast Guard. He began his career in real estate with The Dolben Company working for 25 years before establishing Daniel A Mullin & Associates, which operated until his death. Little Danny Mullin from Arlington, MA knew he made it as he traveled the world from St. Bart's to Singapore. He even managed a cruise around New Zealand & Australia while battling cancer. What he enjoyed most was his time spent with friends. His favorite quote was, "I am the richest man in the world, not in wealth, but in family and friends." Dan was a longtime resident of Beacon Hill, but his special place was a lovely home in Provincetown, a spectacular gathering place for friends and family, as well as the site for many weddings, charity and political fundraisers over the years. He was affectionately known by friends and family as the "Mayor of Provincetown." As a lifelong Catholic, faith was central to Dan's core. He was an active member of St. Cecilia parish for over a decade. His faith was a great comfort throughout his life, especially at the end. A quote from Mary Oliver's poem, "When Death Comes," sums it up: "when it's over, I don't want to wonder if I have made of my life something particular, and real. I don't want to find myself sighing and frightened, or full of argument. I don't want to end up simply having visited this world." Daniel Mullin certainly made something of his life by touching the lives of each and every person he met. He died peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on November 26, 2020 after a long battle with melanoma. Dan leaves his sister Joan Scheib and husband Frank, his sister-in-law Carol Mullin and partner Tim Sturtevant, as well his devoted nieces and nephews: Mary Jo Swiggett and Robert Swiggett, John Scheib, Katherine Scheib and David Holodak, Daniel Scheib and Lynda Kelly, Julie Scheib-Feeley and Dave Feeley, Paul Scheib and Kim Packard-Scheib, Roslyn Scheib Dahl and Eric Dahl, Caitlin Mullin and Guy Dixon, Megan Mullin Kotwicki and Bill Kotwicki and his devoted grandnieces and nephews; Sam, Nick, Gabriel, Cecilia, Kayla, Tommy, Clare, Brendan, Sonja, Lars, Andrew, Ailish, Shelagh, Susie and Catie. He also leaves a large circle of cherished and loving friends. Daniel joins in Heaven his father Daniel Aloysius Mullin and mother Katherine O'Keefe Mullin and his brothers: Richard Mullin, Fr. John Mullin SJ, and Robert Mullin. Our family wishes to thank the outstanding MGH oncology and cardiac teams and countless other MGH employees, as well as our wonderful caregivers: Nurl, Reva, Caleene, Christine and Donna, for the support, patience and love shown to Dan during his illness. Friends are respectfully invited to attend Visiting Hours at St. Cecilia Roman Catholic Church on Sunday, December 6th, from 6 to 8 pm. Masks, social distancing and Covid-19 protocol will be enforced. The Funeral will be private due to Covid-19. We invite friends to join us virtually at www.stceciliaboston.org on December 7 at 11am. We plan to have a Celebration of Dan's Life at a later date. Dan and I were classmates at Holy Cross for 4 years. I remember him as always having smile on his face and a friendly greeting to all. He was a positive person and I was glad to call him a friend. At numerous class reunions, I was glad to see that he was the same Dan Mullin...just a little grayer. Rest in peace, Crusader.

We'll remember Dan's raspy laugh and his sparkling eyes--always ready to find the humor and bring the energy. We'll also remember how dedicated his family was to loving him and caring for him over the past few challenging years. Rest in Peace, Dan.

What can anyone say about Danny? Kind, generous, extraordinarily quick witted always there for not only his friends but anyone who crossed his path.
I will cherish our times at the Four Seasons-few and far between as his social calendar was full due to so many people who loved him and wanted to be with him.
Christmas Eve parties at 1 Otis~~~his own extravagant birthday parties sparing no expense for his multitude of friends. To use the expression-“They threw away the mold, etc......” truly fit Danny! We all love you, you have been through so much but were brave and cheerful every step of the way. Now enjoy your reward.
Love, Donna D.

I worked for Dan the summer before I graduated from college in 1979. I painted, plastered and did minor repairs to many of his units in Beacon Hill & Back Bay. He became a great sounding board for me and a lifelong friend. He was a power of example durning turbulent times and a ray of sunshine as life unfolded.

Bless you Danny!

I will cherish the memories I have with Dan when he would come and visit me at Oils by the Sea Gallery In Provincetown, MA on many a Sunday afternoon. He was a marvelous story teller. And he’d sit on my red sofa and chat away the time with some of the best stories. Visiting Dan at his beautiful home in Provincetown was also a treat, surrounded by his ecclectic collection of note worthy works of art — as the beautiful Provincetown Harbor Bay served as a stunning backdrop at his lovely home. Dan loved to laugh. And he always made me laugh. I’ll miss you Dan. And don’t worry... I will continue to love and look after our beloved Lou. ~
