David Herlihy Obituary

HERLIHY, David Edward, Sr. The former president of the Harvard Club of Boston, has died at his home on Cape Cod, surrounded by his family. The cause was pulmonary fibrosis. He was born in Boston on August 20, 1934. He was the 3rd child of Frank Herlihy, Assistant Superintendent of the Boston Public Schools and Anne Herlihy, a homemaker. Dave grew up in Roslindale but he spent almost every summer on his beloved Cape. Dave attended Boston Latin School. Dave graduated from Harvard College, an institution which he remained involved with throughout his life. Several days after graduating from Harvard, he joined IBM, where he would remain for 38 years. He met his wife Eleanor Gallagher Herlihy, known as Nonnie, in 1959, and they married in 1961. They began their family, and after time spent in Watertown, MA and Canton, MA they moved to Longmeadow with their five children. While in Longmeadow, Dave became actively involved in town politics. In 1973, they moved to Upper Saddle River, New Jersey. In 1987 Dave and Nonnie returned home to Boston. It was there that Dave ended his IBM career, as the Area Director of External Programs. He led all of IBM's New England philanthropic, legislative, and social action initiatives. He extended this work through involvement in the Boston community, working with the United Way, the World Affairs Council and the Massachusetts Business Roundtable. Following his retirement, Dave was elected president of the Harvard Club of Boston. He also served on the Board of Directors of the Harvard Alumni Association. He eventually moved permanently to the Cape, where he became involved with the Harvard Club of Cape Cod, and where much of his time was spent with his children and his 17 grandchildren. In addition to his wife, Nonnie Herlihy, Dave is survived by his children, MaryAnne Ulian and her husband Steve of Wellesley Massachusetts, Elizabeth Herlihy of Boston, David Herlihy Jr. and his wife Ann of Sudbury Massachusetts, LeeEllen and her husband Bob Jones of Concord Massachusetts, and Julie Herlihy and her husband Jeff Kinder of Menlo Park California. He had 17 grandchildren, Christopher, Emmett, Anne, Bridget and Aidan Ulian; Julia, Matthew, John and David Herlihy III; Katie, Charlotte, Timmy and Peter Jones; and James, Elliot, Max and Eleanor Kinder. He was predeceased by his parents and his 2 brothers, Francis Herlihy and Robert Herlihy. In addition, he is survived by 12 sisters and brothers-in-law and 21 nieces and nephews. Herlihy Clan-

We are so very sorry to hear about Dave. He was always so kind to the both of us, always had a smile, and knew absolutely everything anyone would want to know about Boston and Massachusetts. While neither one of us were able to pull ourselves away from our jobs this weekend, know that we were both there in spirit with all of you, and we hope our paths cross again soon.

Love,
Jeff & Marissa O'Neil

Dear Herlihy Family,

Please accept our condolences. We only met Mr. Herlihy a couple of times at the Cape and the Harvard Club, but he was the type of man that always made a big impression. Kind, intelligent and full of life. He set the gold standard for the “greatest generation”.

Dear Nonnie & Family,
David was a great guy. He was always there with a big smile and a warm hello when we came down the Cape to visit our Mom & Dad. Both You and David were great neighbors as well to our Mom & Dad. We feel blessed the Herlihy family had touched our lives.

My God wrap his arms around you all through this difficult time.

Our thougths and prayers are with you.

My condolences to the Herlihy family. Although I only met him a couple of times, he was a dear friend of my recently deceased mother Grace Boyle Winters. Family stories have it that they spent summers together in Hyannis at the "camps" while their fathers were teaching at Hyannis State Teachers College. Again, I am sorry for your loss. God bless you all.

Dear Nonnie,

We are coming up for the Wake and funeral because both Peter and I need to say our good byes to Dave. My guess is it will be an incredibly busy and stressful time to you. I am bringing some early photos of Dave with his brothers and father because Dave always asked me to help balance the Gallagher Clan with some Herlihys..... So this is an attempt to continue to honor his request.

In the process I realized that I met you at age 12 when you and Dave were courting (Marissa is now seriously being courted by a South African!) but what I remember at that time, is my total amazement and wonder at the two of you. You were a knockout back then and the Herlihy's were not sure Dave could keep up with you, yet the two of you would sit on the floor of the Iyannough cottage studying the Real Estate page. At 12 I was trying to understand if this was a "Dating Ritual". It seemed strange at the time, but it definitely worked for the two of you. And ever since those early visits, I have always looked to you and Dave as my model of what a successful marriage really looks like. So I wanted to say a heartfelt thanks for showing many of us the way with such elegance and style through all kinds of weather.

My thoughts will be with you for a long time and please feel free to reach out if you need any more "Herlihy" connections. I will always be here.

Love,

Patti

Dear Nonnie and Family,

It is with such a heavy heart that this is written. Dave was the absolute best. A wonderful family man whose family was his world. A loyal and true friend to those who were fortunate enough to have him as a friend. His caring, kindness and friendship will never be forgotten. He always had time for everyone no matter what he may have had going on himself. A special and true "Gentleman" who will be missed by all. John and I send our deepest sympathies to you at this difficult time.
Love, Ellie and John

Nonnie, and all of the Herlihy Family,
David was a great and Loyal Friend to me for many years in and out of each other's lives.
He taught me how and "why" to get things done.
The Why is the most important part... Because "it was the right thing to do".
David was Special and I am grateful for the opportunity he gave me to know him.
My most sincere condolences.
