It's been a year since Don departed and left a big empty spot in this world. We all continue to miss Don's kindness, optimism, humility, and deep interest in human cultures.

The last time I saw Don was June 1968. He and I were classmates from kindergarten through high school and during that time, while we were not close friends, I had a great respect for his intellect and integrity. He was certainly the brightest of the bright in Jersey City. In December 2009 I reconnected with Don through facebook and we traded a few emails. His summary life story, which he shared with me, was that of a free spirited intellectual, which is what I would have expected him to become. His sudden illness and death is truly tragic and my condolences go out to his family.

Don was a unique friend with deep interest in eastern cultures. I vividly remember him in MIT twenty Chimneys reciting in Persian a spiritual poem on man's successive transformations from inanimate to angelic, all the way to a state beyond imagination. Don has just taken the next step in this journey. Last time we met we enjoyed some Persian food and later fine chamber music in Kresge auditorium (circa 2001). Don, we miss you.

Don was a friend and collegue at Polaroid. I'll always remember his brilliance, inquisitiveness, an friendly way. My wife met him just once and still remembers him well. He will be missed.

Don was a good friend of mine during his years at MIT. We often talked about languages , his passion and I will always remember his enthusiasm when he read a German poem to me. Don did not have a mean bone in his body, he was always affable, full of humor, curious about other people and places. His greatest tribute must be the same today as during his college years: he enriched the lives of all he associated with.
I will miss him very much.

To Don's Family-
The world is a better place because of Don's time here. He shared his life with everyone always with gusto, humility, and a smile. I had the chance to work with Don in several different professional settings but it was always much more than work when I was around him because he was so full of life. His spirit will live on in all of us.

Don, you are leaving a wonderful legacy, so well described by all of your friends: superior generosity, wit, and intellect.
Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts and laughter two months ago, even though we both knew it could be the last time...
You are amazingly inspiring and I'll always think of you with warmth in my heart.

I first met Don when he established the Danger/Microsoft Office. My time with Don was limited to regular phone calls and visits to Billerica. Although the number of meetings was small I counted Don as a genrous friend. Don was a fun guy who kept us all on our toes. His wide ranging knowledge and interests were amazing and his very capable leadership of the team was great to be around.
I will miss Don for a long long time.

I worked with Don as an engineer at both Phoenix and Wavemark, and Don had that knack of getting more out of me even though I thought I'd already given the problem my all. I didn't realize it until later that our (somtimes headed) discussions forced me to refine and focus my line of reasoning, or fold when I couldn't justify my position. Win lose or draw Don always had a smile and encouraging words to keep me going. He'll be sorely missed...

Don had one of the nimblest minds and widest-ranging intellects I have ever known. He was a world citizen long before the term was coined. I never knew when I'd receive a postcard from some far-off corner of the globe in his inimitable chicken scratch. Don was a true friend, and I miss him dearly.

Don, you will be missed dearly. I will remember all the great times at the house, the samba lessons, and of course Paris! A great man with a warm smile that will be forever in our hearts. Rest in peace with the Angels.~

Don Levinstone was amazing, a genius without a doubt, he was so sharp, so quick, always kind and upbeat, and always with a sense of humour. He was unique, with so many dimensions: computers, languages, jokes, and love. I hardly knew him but these things were plain to see. I am happy to have known him, and I am very sad to know he is gone, he should have lived at least 100 years.

From the first day I met Don I was struck by the sense that his energy was more than any one body could hold. The intensity in everything he did made it seem like his body could barely contain him.

Now, although that poor package - exhuasted by the effort of housing so powerful a life force - will have its rest, I feel his spirit is finally free ... and everywhere.

... and maybe, just maybe, infinity will be large enough to hold so much beauty, energy and spirit.

I too salute you, my beautiful friend. Fly free, and I'll listen for your laughter on the wind.

I last met Don in Singapore on his way to Sumatra & Java for a 1-month "Camping Holiday". And he has been the only non-Iranian member of our our MIT-Iranians mailing list. He learned Farsi while visiting Iran before the Revolution. He could even recite Persian Poetry by heart. His many Iranian friends will miss him & grieve with his family on his sad demise.

Donald, meu cunhado e amigo. É chocante e misterioso o fato de que não veremos mais uma pessoa tão querida. Ele adorava nossa terra Bahia, Brasil.

A kind and gentle man, whose quiet goal was always to do good. His determined optimism and persistent good humor were an inspiration.

I was a colleague to Don, but I think for him there was no boundary between colleague and friend. In fact, I'd say that he was a man of no boundaries at all, a true citizen of the world.

We are richer to have known him, poorer that he has gone.

Don was a rare and wonderful human being. I have not come across someone with his good humor and exceptional intelligence in all my professional life. I had the good fortune to have worked with him at Savaje and to have benefited from his effervescent nature and always present good cheer which brought a smile to whoever met him.

Don was my boss at Camex. I loved working for him. He was smart, witty, compassionate, inquisitive and open-minded. For every thought I had, Don had a dozen things for me to consider. So really he was more a teacher than a boss. Somehow he managed to get me to get things done, and enjoy it. Don was also a friend. I'll really miss him.

Even before I worked for him at Wavemark, Don was very friendly to me, and he was supportive of me on the job as my manager. I have fond memories of his stories of travelling to exotic lands, his devotion to his family and of his passionate desire for technical excellence.

Don has been my best friend so many years. I started twitter to know how he was doing, and I learnt his death by Queila's tweet. Very sad news and we all miss him forever. It was fun memory we talked in Hindi, our common foreign language about secret thing. We are the same age and both of us was last hippies . Namaste Don. Naui Hideki @ Tokyo

I am deeply saddened by Don’s all too early death. I remember Don’s powerful intellect and humor. When we worked together at MIT, Don learned Chinese as a hobby. After finishing our meal at a Chinese restaurant, he told the waiter in Chinese that we had no money and would wash the dishes. Recently, we went to a Chinese restaurant for the last time. With great enthusiasm he show me the fish in garden and pictures of his home in South America. My wife, Karen, and I will greatly miss him.
