James Lowenhagen Obituary

In Washington, D.C., June 16, 1945 to Feb. 18, 2005, age 59, died suddenly at the Children's National Medical Center (CNMC). He was born in Plymouth, WI to the late Earl and Beatrice Seeber Lowenhagen. After becoming one of the youngest Eagle Scouts in NY, Jim attended Wilbur Lynch High School in Amsterdam, NY. He earned a Bachelor's degree in Economics from Union College in Schenectady, NY. He received an MBA/MHA from Cornell University Ithaca, NY in 1974. He served as a member of the US Army Corp of Engineers from 1967 to 1970. He was awarded the Bronze Star for his service in Vietnam and attained the rank of Captain. Throughout his career in and commitment to healthcare management, Jim served in the Detroit-Macomb Hospital system in MI, was CEO of Quincy City Hospital, Quincy, MA, VP of Hospital Corp. of America and CEO of Catholic Medical Ctr, Manchester, NH before managing Wake Medical Center's cardiovascular-thoracic surgery practice. His current position was as Center Director for Joseph E. Robert, Jr. Center for Surgical Care at CNMC in Washington, DC. Jim was a generous husband, loving father and loyal friend. He had been a competitive athlete, but was a more competitive bridge and trivial pursuit player, who loved music, history, movies, coaching Greg's soccer and basketball teams and travel. He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Maryellen Murphy Lowenhagen of Raleigh, NC, his daughter, Tracy Ann of Atlanta, GA, son Gregory James of Austin, TX, brother, David Lowenhagen and his wife Veronica of Richmond, VA, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother Charles. A service of Christian burial will be held at 1 PM Wednes. Feb. 23rd at St. Michael Catholic Church, Cary, NC. Interment will be private. The family will receive friends at the church following the service. A memorial celebrating Jim's life and work is planned at the Children's National Medical Center later in the week.
