JOHN GRENHAM Obituary

GRENHAM, The Reverend John Patrick Who served as a Catholic priest and pastor throughout the New Orleans area for 30 Years, died March 6, 2015 in the rectory at St. Thomas Church in Pointe a la Hache, Louisiana. He was 65 years old. A Funeral Mass was celebrated by Archbishop Gregory Aymond on March 20th at St. Thomas Church in Point a la Hache, where Father Grenham had served as Pastor at St. Thomas and Assumption of Mary Mission, Braithwaite, LA since July 2013. Father Grenham was born in Boston on March 17, 1950 and grew up in Norwood, Mass. He earned an undergraduate degree at Boston State College and three master's degrees at the Aquinas Institute of Theology in St. Louis where he received an M.A. in Systematics and Scripture, the Dominican House of Studies in Washington D.C- M.Div. (STB) and the University of New Orleans- M.A. Communications. He was ordained a Dominican Friar in the Archdiocese of Miami on May 21, 1980 and formally incardinated in the Archdiocese of New Orleans in July 1985. Initially he was asked to assist the then Archbishop Phillip Hannon in developing a television ministry. John had a great baritone voice and a history of study in communication so he was tapped to help out. After several years in this work, he asked to be transferred to parish work. John missed working directly with the people developing a sense of community among diverse populations. Over his years in Louisiana, John served as pastor in three New Orleans Churches- St. Dominic, Resurrection of Our Lord and St. Rose of Lima and at st. Benilde in Metairie, Our Lady of Lourdes in Slidell, St. Jane de Chantal in Bita Springs, San Pedro Pescador Parish in St. Bernard, and St. Hubert in Garyville. He was Chaplain of the Mount Carmel Motherhouse; chaplain in both the Coast Guard Reserve and the Navy Reserve; and chaplain for The Slidell Knights of Columbus. He also served as chaplain and taught religion at Redeemer/Seton and Archbishop Hannan high schools. Both John's parish and home were totally wiped out during Hurricane Katrina and he spent many years helping to rebuild parishes, parishioners' homes and schools. Eventually he rebuilt his own home in Pass Christian Mississippi. He designed and helped rebuild the rectory he died in at St. Thomas Parish in Pointe a la Hache. During the Persian Gulf War in the early 1990's, John was a chaplain for two years, assigned to the USS Missouri with the rank of lieutenant. He also spent time in Rome in the Vatican on doctoral studies related to the role of women in the Catholic Church.Survivors include Dr. Hazel Grenham of Marblehead, MA, Sheila Grenham of Studio City, CA, Matthew Grenham of Lewiston, Maine, James Grenham of Medford, MA, and Kathleen Grenham of Oakland CA, 17 grand nieces and nephews and 27 great nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Matthew and Hazel Grenham and his sister, Maureen O h Eigeartaigh, her husband Richard, and his nephew, Kevin Gerrity. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Friday, June 26, 2015 at 11:00 AM at John's childhood parish, St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church in Norwood, MA preceded by interment at Highland Cemetery, Norwood, MA.

I first met Father JP while we were stationed on Okinawa. Then met up again, when we got stationed here in Virginia.
On Okinawa, a friend and myself was producing a variety show on Kadena AFB. A friend who played the guitar at mass, introduced me to Father JP. She said he can sing. He agreed to sing if I go to a cursillo which was bring being held in the near future. I agreed to go and he sang, Danny Boy beautifully. He got me back believing in God and my faith which i stopped believing in, as I got older. He was without judgement, and his own belief and actions, spoke volumes to me. In Virginia I seen him again at mass. This one day I decided to go to mass on base mid week at noon. I was surprised to see him. I remembered he stopped during mass for a few seconds when he noticed me in the back. He had the brightest smile. We had him over many times for dinner. My family was sad to see him leave for Louisiana. He lived his calling, and made me believe in my Roman Catholic faith and God again. I was truly lost for years, and this one man/priest, navy chaplain found me, a very lost military wife, and showed me the way back. RIP JP, I know you're in heaven. Miss you my friend.

Fr. Grenham was chaplain at MCAS Futenma in 1986. He was of great spiritual benefit to me and encouraged me to make a Cursillo. I found this obituary while searching for him as I wanted to reach out to him. My heart is both sad at his passing and joyful over his destination.

He was an excellent priest and a very good man.

I was a second lieutenant in Okinawa when JP came onboard at MAG-36....he was a wonderful man and a great priest. He actually moved a Sunday Mass to 0600 so we (a group of young Marine Officers and one Navt Commander) could get to to Officer's club at 0700 for an all you can eat Sunday buffet. I was also with him in Sunoco and watched as he listened to the confessions of bar girls in the street...may he Rest In Peace. Regards Patrick J. Griffin

I stumbled upon this obituary by accident and I'm saddened by the news. I met Father Grenham in 1991 while serving aboard the USS Missouri, and had a few conversations with him. He was a very kind man.

John and I were roommates, for a time, during our Boston State College days. We both grew up in Norwood, MA, although we did not know each other until college. John was in his senior year, preparing to graduate and, in the name of our Lord, take on the struggles of the world. I was in my sophomore year, still kicking and screaming as I tried to find my place in the world.

I've finally found you, my brother in Christ. And, I am confident and very certain that you still continue to do God's work, as you always have, amongst us all... God Bless you!

Father JP was a wonderful Priest. He was very young when he came to us at St. Dominic. The children adored him. He inspired my adopted son, Eric to be interested more in prayer, and Eric wrote prayers of his own, and was inspired to be an Altar Boy. Further more, Father JP, interested and encouraged young couples to become more involved in the church. He dined in our home many times, and said Mass for us and our children. They got to experience mass, in a much more intimate setting, and learned that our Priest could be our friend too. Many years after Fr. JP had left our parish, and several years after Katrina, I was blessed to have met up with him again at Our Lady of Lourdes in Slidell. I had heard from a friend that he was there. He had a wonderful program that he was sharing, and we attended. I stood in the back and watched the video, and later when the lights came up, and questions were being asked, I raised my hand. His eyes lit up, and he came towards me. I don't know how he recognized me after so many years, but he did!! It was so great to get one of his wonderful Bear Hugs again!! We stayed after and I caught up with him. He was so anxious to see what had gone on with the children too. It was just like him!! He got all lit up!! He had a scar on his face. I asked him what it was. He said he had a skin cancer removed. It worried me, because it was a rather large removal. I told him to keep a close eye on it. I was a 35 year cancer survivor at the time myself. Anyway, that was the last time I saw Fr. JP. He was sent to a new church just a week after that. I was so disappointed, but as we can see, his work was never done. I feel so blessed to have had this wonderful priest in our lives. Every heart he touched was made better and more blessed. May he rest in Gods Loving Arms, with his beautiful Wings all around him. I Love you Fr. JP!! Jewell Shows Hoffman

With much sorrow do we learn of John's passing. The Grenhams and the Murrays had so many years of history and fun on Nahatan Street in Norwood. May John rest in peace, so well earned after such a phenomenal career of service to those countless lives he touched in God's service. Doris Murray Sinkevich
