RICHARD HOLBROOK Obituary

HOLBROOK, Richard D. Of Marblehead, MA, passed away peacefully at home on October 27, 2012. Beloved husband of Christine Holbrook. A kind and gentle parent he leaves his children, Ann (husband Michael), David (wife Jesse), and Katherine, as well as 4 grandchildren; a brother-in-law, Andrew Kirkham (wife Myong Cha), 2 nieces, 1 nephew and many cousins. Predeceased by his parents, Herbert and Ruth Holbrook, he was born and raised in Marblehead, MA. A Marblehead High School graduate, class of 1948, his education continued at Bates College and Boston University where he earned a B.S. degree. During the Korean Conflict, Dick served as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy. He returned to attend Harvard Business School, earning an MBA, class of 1959. His professional career spanned nearly 50 years, beginning with Ludlow Corporation, Polaroid and Denison Manufacturing Company in a general management capacity and then as a Divisional President for Textron Inc. Fulfilling a life-long dream of running his own business, he founded a management consulting firm in 1983, Richard D. Holbrook & Associates, with principles in Germany and the UK, as well as the States. Dick taught business courses as an adjunct professor at Boston University, MA, Binghamton University, NY, and at Endicott College in Beverly, MA. He was also a guest lecturer at Cornell University and served as a judge for an Entrepreneurship course. As an ardent supporter of Marblehead, he served on the Board of trustees of Abbot Public Library and the Old Burial Hill Oversight Committee. He also enjoyed membership in the Romeo's and the Whiting Club. He was a member of First Church of Christ Scientist, Marblehead and Boston. Throughout his life, Dick maintained a lifelong passion for singing, classical music, fly fishing, and all-things New England. He loved spending time with his children, and was overjoyed when he could take his grandchildren for ice cream. A best friend, and loyal, loving companion, he will be greatly missed. Family and friends are kindly invited to gather for his memorial service on Saturday, November 10th at 11 am at the Eustis & Cornell Funeral Home, 142 Elm Street, MARBLEHEAD, MA. The family requests any remembrances be made to the Hospice of the North Shore of Greater Boston, 75 Sylvan Street, Danvers, MA 01923. Dear Ann and Family,

I hope this note finds you all well during this trying time.
It was with great concern and sadness that I found out about Mr. Holbrook's passing. It happened like this:

I was at work when a co-worker, who was reading the paper, blurted out, "Richard HOLCOMB died!"
I exclaimed, "What?!" As I thought he was referring to a mutual acquaintance and that tragedy had struck again, since another co-worker had just been hit and killed by a car the night of October 31st as he was getting the mail from a box out by the road. Remarkably, his obituary said his favorite holiday was Halloween.

Anyway, as I crossed the room to look at the paper, he said,"No, it's Richard HOLBROOK." Deja vu, I knew the name was familiar somehow, and then I had that sinking feeling. I quickly read that it was, in fact, Ann's dad.

I don't read the obituaries much and it's a plain miracle that Mr. Holbrook's passing was brought to my attention in this manner, and after all these years.

I only met him once, but was surprised to learn of Mr. Holbrook's deep roots in New England and wondered how you guys wound up in Vestal?

I tried to figure out a way to get to Marblehead for the memorial service, but, unfortunately, it just wasn't possible timewise, so the money I would've spent on gas getting there is being put to better use at the Hospice of the North Shore.

So, I'm thinking of you, as usual, but especially now at this sad time. Many condolences. Take care.
Love, Rob

The Last Goodbye

The ship awaits you
The sea is ready
To bear you away
To the sunset of dreams

Tearful goodbyes
To the ones that love you
Knowing too well
That you cannot stay

We touched so briefly
Yet we remember
As if imprinted
On our very souls

You were the one
The whole world stopped for
You were the one so humbly rare
You were the love of a lifetime journey
You were the one who made us care

Rest you now the incense burning
Rest you now within the urn
Holding hands forever feeling
The love you gave
To the willing world

But on we go
The world still turning
And eyes so burning
From our river of tears

Thank you for the light you shined here
Thank you for your courage bold
Bless you for the years of trying
When the gift was so hard to hold

Rest you now in soft green pastures
Sleep you now in God's enfold
Take your memories of earth's great lessons
To the stars-for the young and old.
