ROBERT KANE Obituary

KANE, Robert J. "Bob" EASTON——-Robert J. "Bob" Kane, 74, founder and co-owner of Kane Funeral Home & Cremation Services and a resident of Easton for the past 52 years, died peacefully with dignity and care with his loving family and longtime best friend and business partner by his side on Saturday, April 22, 2017 at Brigham & Women's Hospital in Boston after a brief illness. Born in Boston, a son of the late James and Madeline (Gokey) Kane, he was raised in Boston and was a graduate of Brighton High School. Bob continued his education at New England Institute of Anatomy, Embalming, Sanitary Science and Funeral Directing, Kenmore Square, Boston, receiving a Diploma in 1961. He furthered his education at Suffolk University in Boston earning at Bachelor of Arts in 1966. Later in his professional career he advanced his studies by earning a Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) from Emmanuel College in Boston in 2004 at the age of 62. Bob moved to Easton in 1965 and began working in the Easton Public School System as a substitute teacher in hopes of being appointed to a full time teaching position. Bob would often take walks around Stonehill College in Easton when he first settled in town and began to build a personal friendship with members of the Congregation of Holy Cross Priest and Brothers. During his conversations with the late Rev. John Murphy C.S.C. and Brother James Madigan C.S.C. they were both influential in recommending Bob to open his own funeral home. After reflecting upon their advice, he established Kane Funeral Home & Cremation Services in 1968 at the age of 25. During his beginning years of operating the funeral home and building relationships to support his goals, he worked as a professional trade embalmer for numerous funeral homes from Boston to the South Shore for over 40 years. As Bob's reputation and business grew throughout the years he knew he would eventually need assistance to help maintain and run the operations as well as to continue in the future what he worked so hard to establish. In 1987, by fate, he met Stephen Raymond, who at the age of 18 was seeking a career in funeral service. Bob enrolled him as an apprentice and the two created a mutually respected professional working relationship and the closest of family like friendship. Both shared the same goals regarding funeral service: foremost, to treat the deceased with the utmost dignity and care, secondly, provide each family with guidance, compassion and empathy and last, be ethical both in life and in the profession of funeral service. In 1995 he sold the majority of the interest in the business to Stephen while remaining a co-owner, mentor and advisor of the funeral home until his passing. From 1966-1970 Bob served at New England Institute for Funeral Service Education in Kenmore Square, Boston, as a Professor of Embalming, Funeral Directing, History and Restorative Art, as well as the Director of Admissions and Student Counselor. Bob was appointed to the Massachusetts Commission on Medico-Legal Investigations for over six years commencing in 1982, representing Funeral Service on the Board. He later resumed teaching at the New England Institute for Funeral Service Education @ Mt. Ida College, from 1988-2000 as an Instructor in Embalming, Funeral Directing, Restorative Art and History of Funeral Directing, Program Advisor, Acting Program Director and Program Director. The numerous students enrolled in the program of Funeral Service throughout the years and those who he had the pleasure of educating and advising has made Funeral Service in the Commonwealth the respected profession it is today. He was the Founder and Facilitator of the Kenmore Square Institute for Continuing Education, LLC since 2000 traveling around the state and conducting seminars for funeral directors to obtain the necessary required CEU's in the Commonwealth. He also served as the Program Director, Funeral Certificate Program, Massasoit Community College, from 2005-2006. Bob's professional licensure consisted of the following: Licensed Funeral Director and Embalmer, Commonwealth of Massachusetts since 1963, Certified Educator, Commonwealth of Massachusetts, Certified Funeral Service Professional, CFSP (Ambassador for the Academy of Professional Funeral Service Practice), and a Member of the British Institute of Embalmers. Bob was a Notary Public and Justice of the Peace. He served the Community of Easton in various capacities of Town Government for over 40 years and was a past member of the Easton Housing Authority, former Selectman and a member of the Easton Board of Health from 1981-2011 serving many years as chairman. His contributions helped Easton to become a better community. A founding member and communicant of the Holy Cross Church in Easton, he served as head usher, taught faith formation classes and was the recipient of the Marian Medal. Bob served as a longtime corporator of the North Easton Savings Bank, he was a member of the Natural Resource Trust of Easton, The Ames Free Library in Easton, The Easton Democratic Town Committee, Registrar of Voters in Easton, A life member of both the Knights of Columbus Council 238 of Easton and The Easton Lions Club, a 4th degree member of the Cardinal O'Connell Assembly and a member of the Mountain View Yacht Club in Gilford, NH. Bob's professional licensure consisted of the following: Licensed Funeral Director and Embalmer, Commonwealth of Massachusetts since 1963, Certified Educator, Commonwealth of Massachusetts, Certified Funeral Service Professional, CFSP (Ambassador for the Academy of Professional Funeral Service Practice, and a Member of the British Institute of Embalmers. He enjoyed friendships within and outside the community which he held dearly, including funeral service professionals. Bob was an antique car enthusiast and had recently restored a car similar to his first one he ever owned, a Hudson, which would often be seen in the Town of Easton parades. His greatest pleasure was a lifetime spent at his cottage home on Bear Island, Lake Winnipesaukee, NH. An avid boater, his love and devotion to family including his brothers, sister, nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles will be forever remembered. He will be always be missed by Stephen & MaryBeth Raymond and their children Kayla, Jackie, Courtney and Sean whom he had the pleasure for 17 years watch grow, mentor, advise and share priceless memories. Bob is survived by two brothers, Albert Kane of Merrimack, NH and Thomas Kane of Easton; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was also the brother of the late Richard Kane, Peter Kane and Madeline Sullivan. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend visiting hours on Wednesday from 3-8 p.m. in Kane Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 605 Washington St. (Rte.138) Easton. A funeral Mass will be held on Thursday at 10:00 a.m. in the Holy Cross Church, 225 Purchase St., Easton. So very saddened to learn of this great man's passing. Mr. Kane and I became acquainted in 1992 when I arrived to Boston to Start my Studies at NEi-The National Centre for Death Education at Mt. Ida College.
He was an honoured and most revered Professor and Mentor.
In and out of the classroom he instilled virtue and ethics and contributed greatly to my development within the vocation. I could not thank this man enough. I never met another professional so kind, authentic and dedicated to helping others in this life with the transition of the decedent to the next life.
What a professional. mentor, gentleman and friend. I literally write this with tears in my eyes.

We got to know Bob when we both worked in The Blackthorn Tavern in Easton. On many a conversation he would talk to US about his trips to Ireland as we both came from there that was 1985/1986 we returned to Ireland and got married in July 1987 and we had the privilege of Bobs company on our wedding day in Galway.

May God hold you close in his company, Bob, for it is truly where you deserve to be. I never got a chance to meet you until December,1996, as you prepared and carried out the wake and funeral of my dad, Fred Wilde. Yet I knew you well at that point through the eyes and ears of my mom and dad. They would tell me wonderful accounts of the days when you were a Selectman and my dad was the Registrar of Voters. Some of the greatest memories were with your interactions with my parents on the Easton Democratic Town Committee. Seven years ago you gave Rita her final sendoff in a manner and style that you had crafted and perfected over the years. You have done the same for so many of my aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Thank you Bob, and may God grant unto you perpetual life by his side.

Bob- was just a great man and great friend. He was always there for me. He helped me get my 1st internship, gave me a job during college and truly helped shape my career, and the person I am today. Bob's interest in each persons life was so sincere. A great character trait to have and one I am so blessed that he taught me. No matter what your dealings are with someone the importance of actually listening and caring about the individual your are speaking with, he stressed don't just go through the motions of getting through a meeting. A trait I use daily in my business. I could go on forever- Bob was my mentor and my friend. Rest In Peace !

To Bob's Family,

Please accept my deepest sympathy on your loss of a true gentlemen and
great teacher. Bob was my teacher at NEI. in the late 60s, was a wealth of
knowledge and very nice person all around.

We had the one great thing in common and that was the Big Lake. I was
raised in Meredith and worked there. We had many talks about Bear Island
and surrounding area. He often boated into Meredith Bay or the Weirs and I
would bump into him., always smiling and enjoying life.
May God Bless You Bob, you will be thought of often when i am at the Lake.

Robert will be missed on Bear Island by many people. Such a gentle spoken man, who's personality served him well in his chosen profession. He didn't make it over to French Cove often but when he stopped at every cottage reminiscing with everyone about childhood memories of his parents, siblings and summers at the lake.

God bless you Robert and say hello to everyone in heaven for us, you will be missed.

With deepest condolences,

I remember Bob from when I was a child and I used to ride my bike down Prospect Street and would talk to him and his mother and how kind they were.
I remember how my father said what an amazing thing he did to open his funeral home at such a young age. When my family and friends had to deal with our own losses it was always Bob Kane that we turned to.

If you hadn't seen him in a year or 20 years, he always knew who you were and was sincerely happy to see you.

For all the peace and goodness you brought to so many people.

God bless you. Rest in peace.

My father Al Dolan was Maddy Kanes cousin, Robert and I had only met a few times. This one was especially memorable. My adult daughter and her fiancee drove up to Winnipesaukee for a weeks vacation. My daughter, Jessica offered to take her then finance to see the observatory at St Johns. They left our camp at 10 am. it is a 15 min walk to the observatory. At 2pm I began to worry.at 4pm I was ready to call the police. Rounding the corner on Aikens cove, a boat comes toward our cottage (the old Ciccola property)..... I see my daughter and son -in-law in the boat. As they approached, I recognized Robert. As it happened Jess and Nick got badly lost on Bear Island..and stumbled upon a man who extended his help to this young couple, offered to bring them back. As Jess gave directions to south Bear, Bob mentioned to her that he had relatives on this side of the island, the Dolans.... my daughter exclaims "my mom is a Dolan".. by now they were dockside and we all had a good laugh. I guess that is the best and only story I have. So sorry for your loss. May he rest in heavenly Peace on the Beautiful Water.

Now that I am 54 years old and think of all the great times we had with you It warns my heart. I can't help but think of the hardest days the loss of your loving Mother. Over the last 7 years the loss of both of my parents in a 7 month time frame Some how you got my Dad and his family through the hardest time in his and our lifes the loss of our Mother. I thank you for that. Then just seven months later you got his family through the loss of him our Dad. I can say with all of my heart Bob you are the True meaning of a FRIEND.❤ The Meade family and the McIntosh family will never forget you our dear friend. You will always have a special spot in all of our hearts. Love,Teresa Meade-McIntosh

My dear friend Bob, you were the one who gave me the chance many years ago by teaching and showing me the ropes in funeral service. Those values have always stuck with me because of you. I love you my friend. God Speed

I was so sorry to hear about Bob's passing. Bob was the man who helped my family get through the most difficult times in our lives. With Bob's help and kind, compassionate demeanor we were able to lay our family members to rest in a most dignified way. The passing of my sister, father, son and mother were very difficult for us and Bob helped ease our pain with his genuine and caring way. He was a wonderful man and I as well as the rest of my family will miss him greatly. There is no doubt that he is in Heaven. Thanks for everything Bob- Godspeed, God Bless and until we meet again.

I was just ten years old when my family moved next door to Bob. That was 47 years ago! He was a good friend to our family. When I joined the Air Force at 17 and would come home on leave he would always come by to see how I was doing. When my mother died two years ago I know it was a difficult loss for him as well. It won't seem the same not seeing him next door when I come home to visit. He knew our family. He loved our family. We loved him. He will be greatly missed by me, my family, and the community. Thank you Bob for all you did for so many. We loved you.

Bob was one of the most genuine, compassionate and giving people I was blessed to know. His commitment to the Town of Easton was amazing, making it a better place for all to live. He was incredibly gracious to my family over the years for which I will always be grateful. He will be dearly missed. Thoughts and prayers are with his family.

He was an amazing man and will be missed. I remember when he officiated my father and stepmother's wedding and his genuine caring and comfort upon the loss of several of my family members. His kind heart and generosity will surely live on forever.
