Albert Schendel Obituary

Albert, known as Wilson, Schendel passed away peacefully in his sleep the morning of Nov. 7, 2007, in Bozeman. He was born to Albert and Stella Bower Schendel in Tonasket, Wash., on Nov. 23, 1917.

In early childhood, his family returned to their ranch near Ennis. Some of his happiest memories were growing up on the ranch with his brothers and sisters. He attended Ennis schools and was active in high school sports, especially basketball. He graduated in 1937.

Wilson married Joy Bates in Bozeman on June 1, 1940. The couple moved to Missoula, where Wilson was employed by Northern Pacific Railroad, later Burlington Northern Railroad. In 1943, his only child, Dale, was born. He retired from Burlington Northern in 1979, after 39 years as a conductor.

After retiring, Wilson and Joy moved to Bozeman to be closer to family and grandchildren. He cherished the time he spent with each of his grandchildren, helping to nurture them along the road to adulthood. He was a longtime member of Grand Avenue Christian Church. Wilson was a friend to everyone he met and would help anyone in need when he could. He could grow anything, and many folks benefited from his garden.

Besides his family and friends, his other passion was golf. In the early '90s Wilson and Joy began wintering in Mesa, Ariz., where Wilson could play golf and not "have to shovel snow!" He enjoyed many years of cards, golf and friends while in Mesa.

In 2005, Wilson and Joy relocated permanently to Highgate Senior Assisted Living in Bozeman due to Wilson's failing health.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters, Ella, Mildred, and Phoebe; and his brother, Woodworth.

Wilson is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Joy; his son, Dale (Wendi); his brother, Chester (Kitty); grandchildren, Jonathan (Cheryl), Joanna (Jeff), Stephanie (Tom); and great-grandchildren, Jonathan, Cassidy, and Deven. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews and their families.

As Wilson requested, there will be no funeral services. His final resting place will be in the family plot at the Ennis cemetery with a service at a later date.

Memorial gifts may be given to the charity of choice, or to Grand Avenue Christian Church in Bozeman.

Arrangements are in the care of Dahl Funeral Chapel, Bozeman.
