Walter Eagle Obituary

Walter (Wally) Eagle, a life-long Montanan, was born in Long Beach, Calif. on Feb. 26, 1927, the youngest of 10 children born to Sam and Ida Eagle. He passed away peacefully at the age of 86 on April 29, 2013 in Bozeman.

School years were spent in Bozeman until his graduation from Montana State College (now MSU). In 1951 he married Frankie Rowse of Ennis. He began a 31-year career at Bozeman Senior High where he taught mathematics and also coached the ski team for 10 years. Upon receiving a national science grant, he earned his master's degree at the University of Colorado.

His teaching profession allowed him to spend summers co-managing the family business, Eagle's Store, in West Yellowstone, founded in 1908. From carrying ice from the ice house and making ice cream for the soda fountain as a youngster, to raising a family within the business, the store remained a significant connection to his large family and a place where countless life-long friendships began.

Wally was a man with a quiet, deep-rooted faith based on a sense of wonder in nature and love of the outdoors. Early loves included scouting, ice skating, hiking, biking, camping and enjoying all aspects of Yellowstone Park. Later, he and his brothers made burlap skins for their skis to assist in extensive back country adventures and performing snow surveys throughout the region. His love of skiing continued as a competitive racer in college and active involvement in development of Bridger Bowl, including helping build early lifts and serving on the board of directors. After retiring to West Yellowstone in 1981, he and Frankie continued to ski at Big Sky up to 60 days per year until he was in his early-80s.

While he enjoyed waterskiing, canoe camping, backpacking, hunting and golf, he was most passionate about fly fishing. The Feather Duster nymph he created has become a staple in the tackle boxes of regional fishermen. To him the only thing better than the gratification of catching and releasing a trout on a fly he had tied was sharing this joy with others. His detailed fishing logs chronicle numerous adventures, including those he took under his wing and introduced to the sport. Many fondly recall time spent appreciating nature with Wally while visiting over a snack and awaiting the next insect hatch. Whether fly fishing, skiing or the proper way to peel an orange, Wally was a mentor and teacher far beyond the classroom.

He and Frankie spent 61 remarkable years together enjoying the outdoors, playing bridge and other card games, attending Hawk and Bobcat events, and enjoying the company of friends and family. Time was filled with laughter fueled by his quick wit and love of a good story.

Wally's family includes his wife, Frankie; daughters, Kristie (Scott) McPhie of Bozeman and Kendra (Arnie) Owen of Great Falls; sons, Kim (Darlene) Eagle of Ann Arbor, Mich., and Jack (Vickie) Eagle of Billings; grandchildren, Meagan (Stu) Binenstock, Mark McPhie, Heather McPhie, Brandon (Nicole) Owen, Ryan (Melanie) Owen, Taylor Eagle, Lexi Eagle and Andy Eagle; great-grandchildren Coby and Zac Binenstock, and Presley Owen. He is also survived by his brother, Joe (Kay) Eagle, sister-in-law, Margaret Eagle, and numerous other relatives. He was preceded in death by his parents, eight siblings, great-grandson, Keller Owen, and many extended family members.

A celebration of Wally's life will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, July 22, 2013 at the Community Protestant Church in West Yellowstone. Condolences may be sent to P.O. Box 10113, Bozeman, MT 59718. Memorial donations can be made to the Yellowstone Historic Center, P.O. Box 1299, West Yellowstone, MT 59758; the Bridger Bowl Foundation, 15795 Bridger Canyon Road, Bozeman, MT 59715, or a charity of choice.

Wally's passing has saddened me, yet brought back happy memories - those of my first experience working seasonal at Eagle's in West Yellowstone back in 1997. Wally and his siblings were always so friendly and encouraging, and Wally was quick to tell me of somewhere new to go for my days-off adventures, one of my favorite being Sawtelle Peak where I found beautiful wildflower meadows. Returning to those places even today reminds me of Wally. My condolences to the entire Eagle family.

Sorry to hear of Wally's passing, he taught me to ski in 52 at Bear Canyon ski area. Had the opportunity to ski with Wally off and on until 72, will miss that form on the mountain, could always spot him and Frankie coming down the hill. Also beat algebra 1&2 into my head so I could graduate from BSH in 58.... SKI THE COLD SMOKE WALLY, I'll be there one of these days and I'll be looking for you. Charles Parke

Dear Eagles All, How will Montana ever survive without Wally Eagle I wonder. My most fond memories were not of the classroom, but of Bridger Bowl. The great photos my Dad took of Wally's perfect form in the powder still grace our walls as if it were yesterday. AND then there was my summer at Eagle's Store in West. What an experience! I will never forget watching Wally and Kim entertain and intrigue new folks to the area with fishing tackle, good stories and great trips to plan. What a pleasure it is to recall Wally's amazing influence on us all. My best wishes and prayers to all of you. My heart is with you as is all of the Fritts family. Love to you all.

Some of my fondest childhood memories involve Wally (and all of the Eagles)and I remember never wanting to miss a thing when he and my father got together and told stories of their early days in Yellowstone. I cannot imagine Montana without him in it. He will be deeply missed. My love and prayers go out to the whole family.

Growing up in West Yellowstone in the 40s and 50s Frankie and Wally and Eagle family were special friends to all. My parents Bus and Ruth Elliott were some of the earliest teachers in "West" in the early 40s. The Eagle family support for the schools and community ran far and wide as it still does. We moved to Bozeman as West had no hi school at the time. In 1963 Wally was my Algebra II teacher and it took all my restrain to refrain from calling him Wally instead of Mr Eagle! I loved the class. It is a very small world and Wally was known and loved far and wide as evidenced by the entries recorded here. To Frankie and family my deepest sorrow for your and our loss. Bob Elliott

Will always remember Wally as a great teacher and a smiling face around the store in West. His personal math course was one of the best classes I ever took. It was a pleasure to get to know him outside of his "teaching" persona. Our condolences to the whole family. I know he will be missed.

Frankie and family,

Wendy and I were both saddened by the news of Wally. As I spent time in Wally's classroom preparing to become a math teacher I learned more about teaching in a classroom from Wally, than I did in all my classes at the university. Wally was passonate about life, but extremely passonate about teaching, skiing and fly fishing. As I spent time working for the Eagles I learned he was passonate about friends and family. At Wally's urging Wendy and I returned from Alaska and spent two summers in West Yellowstone after our marriage. We learned about passonate family life as we were sandwiched in the middle cabin between his family and Carl and Ethel.

Wally, you have touched many lives and you will be missed greatly.

Kristie & family,
Very sorry to hear of your father's passing. He taught my father math in the early 50's and I had him for algebra later on in the 70's. Always a caring and generous man with a bright smile. Treated everyone fairly and equally. He lived a long, wonderful life and I hope the good memories outweigh these days of grief. God bless.

Wally was my Algebra 2 teacher when I was a Junior at Bozeman Senior High School. He so inspired me in math, that I became a high school math teacher. I have spent the last 44 years teaching math with the excitement Wally taught. I have visited him in West Yellowstone many times in the past 30 years in my treks out to Montana visiting my folks, and mentioned to him why I became a teacher.
