Edward Robertson Obituary

Brownsville - Dale Edward Robertson 94, Edward Dale Robertson, age 94, of Brownsville, Texas, died Thursday, June 29, 2023. Ed was born to Josephine Crow and Hugh Robertson in Arkadelphia, Arkansas, on August 7, 1928. He and his family moved to San Benito, Texas, in 1930 when Hugh Robertson became pastor of the First Presbyterian Church. Ed attended San Benito High School and the University of Texas at Austin. As a junior, he transferred to Davidson College, North Carolina, where he graduated in 1949. He remained an avid Longhorn and Wildcat fan his entire life. He returned to Austin and received his Master's of Divinity from Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary in 1952.

Ed married Joyce Hennig on January 29, 1952. They sailed to Scotland to attend classes at St. Andrew's College and toured Europe by bicycle.

Ed served churches in Fredericksburg, Natalia, Port Lavaca, Austin, and Brownsville. He also served the church in San Benito where his father served in the 1930s. Along with his beloved pastoral duties, he enjoyed leading youth camps at Mo-Ranch and Montreat and youth mission trips to Mexico. Ed also served the community by his work with the Lions Club and the Salvation Army. He loved being a football referee and officiated football games in Austin, the Rio Grande Valley, and Tampico for more than 30 years.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Joanne Matthews. He is survived by his wife Joyce, his children Dale and Melissa of San Benito, Katherine and Genie of Austin, Sally of Austin, and his grandchildren Chris, Rachael, Courtney, Alexa, Josh, Elena, Kirsten, Heather, Jordan, and Claire. He is also survived by his great-grandchildren Levi, Van, Lucas, Aidan, Arthur, and Sienna, his brother-in-law James, his sister-in-law Sharon, and beloved nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made as Tribute Gifts to Presbyterian Mo-Ranch Assembly or First Presbyterian Church Brownsville.

My deepest condolences on the passing of Reverend Ed Robertson. I met Reverend Robertson when I was 14 or 15 years old in 1980. I was a member of San Pablo Presbyterian church and he was shepherding First Presbyterian on Elizabeth. We had such great fellowship. I greatly loved him, not only for bringing me closer to our Lord and Savior but also because he officiated my wedding to my husband Erasmo in 1990. He and my husband got along really well because they both officiated sports games. I lost my dear husband last year in 2022 and now my great friend in Christ, Reverend Robertson. May they be officiating games in heaven. My condolences to Reverend Robertson´s dear ones. I´m sure he´s resting with our Lord and Savior. RIP

Ohhhh Ed Robertson! He grew up with my mom Marilyn Nowakowski! I was blessed to have gone on two of his mission trips to Mexico! What a thrill!! He locked two of us in our rooms by tying a rag from our door knob to the outside railing! Oh what fun he had and oh what a sense of humor! I sure loved that sweet, sweet man! Prays for the whole family! I look forward to catching up with him in the presence of Jesus! I can only imagine their conversations!!!

Ed was absolutely wonderful. I remember details of some of his sermons that particularly spoke to me. I got baptized for the first time at age 30 when Ed was the pastor. May he RIP I received more blessings than I could ever give in my role as church musician at First Presbyterian Brownsville.

My condolences to all the Robertson Family and may God give you peace and comfort.

Rev. Ed Robertson a man of God and a gentle soul. He spiritually nurtured so many people and was a kind and loving man.
Ed was very much a part of the lives of our family. He married Beto and I, baptized our children, and they were also confirmed by him. He provided a lifetime of spiritual nurturing for us. Thank you, Ed, for your love and care you gave to our family.

You are a legend and were a good and faithful servant to our Lord!

Our family owes so much to Ed for our faith formation and our connection to the Presbyterian Church. He officiated the wedding for Sam and me, and baptized our three children. A tree flourishes on the grounds of Elizabeth and Palm as a memorial to my grandmother Anna Lee. First Presbyterian is my church home-away-from-home whenever I am visiting the family property, and I have had occasion to be present in San Benito when Ed was preaching there. Truly a life well-lived, loving and serving the Lord!

It is with great love and thanks that I send my prayers and greeting each of the family.

He was such an influential figure in Jimmy and my life as well as the lives of our children, Heather and Perry. We treasure the wonderful memories we made with Ed from our wedding, to many youth trips to Mexico, years of activities at FPC and camp at Mo Ranch. What comfort those memories bring us now and will continue to provide for years to come.

There is comfort and joy in knowing he has joined those beloved who have gone before!

May God bless each of you with that peace that passes all understand. Know that I am holding each of you in prayer.

Unfortunately, I am in Utah and don't return until Sunday so I will miss Ed's memorial service, but I will be there in spirit and prayer.

God bless you.

In 1970, my father Rev. Efrain Buenfil was hired by Getsemani Presbyterian church in Kingsville, Tx. My father received his Masters of Christian Ed in Richmond Virginia. ( a scholarship program given to ministers in all parts of the world). We were originally from Yucatan and Campeche Mexico. All this to say that Ed made it a point to not only help us cross into the United States (legally I might add). He brought us across the bridge Matamoros/ Brownsville. And drove us all the way to Kingsville Tx. Even bought us kids some snacks. ( my first Hygia chocolate milk). Ed holds a very special place in my heart and always will! Rest in peace my brother, we will see you one day in heaven!
