Melvin L. Smith

BUCYRUS: Melvin L. Smith, 64, of Bucyrus, beloved husband, father, and grandfather passed away on Sunday November 26, 2017 while at home after a year long battle of cancer.

Mel was born July 16, 1953 to Charles and Bernadine Smith (both deceased) in Logan County, Ohio. Mel grew up in Hardin and Logan Counties, graduating from Belle Center High School in 1971. He held various jobs in Ohio and Arkansas meeting a lot of friends along the way. It was through a mutual friend that he met the love of his life, Jennifer Pinson on May 2, 1986. They were married July 18, 1986 and had two children: Bradley Josias (whom Mel formally adopted November 27, 1987) and Katie Linn on July 3, 1990.

Mel was a very active member of the Lincoln Ave church of Christ in Bucyrus preaching and teaching on numerous occasions, something he found to be a great privilege. Mel never knew a stranger and met many wonderful people along life's journey from selling Schwann ice cream and selling insurance to working at the Bucyrus Lamp Plant from 2011 until going on medical leave in May 2017. Mel also served on the Bucyrus City Council for a short period.

In addition to his wife and two children, Mel is survived by three beautiful granddaughters: Madison, 12; Kylee, 10; and Addelynn, 7; his siblings: Mike (Linda) Smith of Franklin, Ohio; Maria (Jim) Brownfield of Searcy, Arkansas; Margaret (Bill) Grimes of Defiance, Ohio; Doug (Ruth) Smith of Belle Center, Ohio; and Don (Diane) Smith of DeGraff, Ohio; mother-in-law Imogene Pinson of Bucyrus; sisters and brothers-in-law: Kathy Scott; Becky and Jim Armbruster and Danny Pinson, all of Bucyrus; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and many friends.

The family will receive visitors at Munz-Pirnstill Funeral Home in Bucyrus on Thursday November 30, 2017 from 2-4 and 6-8 pm. Funeral Services will be held on Friday at 11:00 am in the Funeral Home with Gavin Coriell, Minister from Tennessee officiating, burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery.
