Every New Year's, the whole "gang" from college would come to Holland and to be with Alvin and all the Chmielewskis. Each year since he was born, I would see Nicky grow. At first, everyone struggled to discover who he was and how he percieved the world. I remember how he enjoyed being thrown in the air and spun around in his father's arms as a baby. He was never afraid of the world around him. Then, he found his music, and his voice. He would play his keyboard all New Year's Eve. He would remember all of us from the year before and talk to us. He and his brother, Ben, became a part of our tradition. I always think of Nick, and his quiet way of overcoming the obstacles in his young life. He was kind, intelligent, and determined. He continued to achieve and grow every day in his individual and creative way. Thinking of Nick has always inspired me, and he continues to inspire me to be giving and strong.

Nicky, you came to us early, and left us too early as well. Mommy and Daddy love you and will love you all the days of our lives. You helped us "see" the world through your eyes, and what we saw was beautiful. You brought music, laughter, love, and joy to our lives, and we pray that we were able to give you as much during your time with us. Sweet dreams Nicholas, someday we will hold you in our arms again, and Ben wishes you to know you are in his heart and in his dreams. All our love, Mommy and Daddy

Dear Jeff and Colleen,
A little boy I came to know because of my Grandaughter, Emily. How loving it was when I would get her off the bus and they would be leaning shoulder to shoulder sound asleep. For some reason, his stay was short, but the memories will last forever. God Bless you and help you through this difficult time. Norm and Mary Ann Metzger

Jeff and Colleen I had the pleasure of eating lunch with Nick every day for the 3 years he was in school. You couldn't find a nicer kid! He had a great sense of humor and loved to kid-around with his adult friends at school. He will be missed. Nancy Bartoo Teacher Aide Holland Elementary School

My dear friend Colleen:
In this difficult time, I am thinking of you and sending thoughts of love and support. As a mother, my heart grieves with you. A parent should never have to bury a child. But know that Nick was loved by everyone. He was such a sweet boy. I guess God wanted his special son to be with him. With all my love and prayers, Susan (Savage) Dake
