Rex S. Caroll, of Derby, longtime owner of a namesake plumbing and heating business, died Aug. 5 in Rochester Memorial Hospital after a four-month illness. He was 72.
Born in Buffalo, he was a longtime resident of Derby.
For more than 30 years, Mr. Caroll owned and operated Rex Caroll Plumbing & Heating, a Derby business that had a customer base throughout Erie County. The business is currently run by his sons.
Family members said he was known for his kindness and willingness to help everyone.
Mr. Caroll was a longtime drag racing enthusiast and competed at tracks in Lancaster and Rochester. He also enjoyed boating on Lake Erie.
Survivors include his wife of 50 years, the former Mary Ann Hendricks; a daughter, Elaine; three sons, Rex S. Jr., Mark H. and Steve M.; a sister, Ernestine; 11 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be at 5 p.m. Friday in Colombo's Bar & Grill, 1957 Lakeview Road, Lake View.
