Dr. Takako Michii, Ph.D., 89, was born July 9, 1934, in Tokyo, Japan and passed away August 19, 2023 peacefully at home in Lancaster, NY. She is survived by her husband, Makoto, as well as her two sons, Maki Lawrence and Yuki Christopher. In her youth, Takako started as a lifestyle section reporter for the Yomiuri Shimbun where she was the interpreter for the Beatles during their tour stop in Tokyo. Takako and her husband emigrated to the U.S. in 1966 to Buffalo, NY. Takako went on to earn her Ph.D. at SUNY Buffalo in Educational studies. A truly wonderful person. Michii San was one of the first people to believe in my endeavors with the Japanese language as a young adult. She supported me and helped me learn the basics of the language and helped guide me to the Kanazawa ambassador program. I will forever be grateful to her as it is now my life occupation pursuing Japanese language and art history. Thank you for everything Michii San.

I had the honor of working with Michii san when I was working in Kanazawa, Buffalo´s sister city in Japan, as a Coordinator for International Relations for the City Hall there. I was part of the team who had the privilege of assisting her in any way needed when she led the sister city delegations and visits to Kanazawa. I will always remember her firecracker spirit. I loved the way she taught about Japanese culture; she had a special way of just drawing one in with her captivating storytelling ability and never-ending fountain of knowledge. She was absolutely amazing and led a lifetime of adventures and inspired so many people. I feel so honored to have been able to meet her. I haven´t seen her for over 15 years and yet the impression she left on me will last a lifetime. She will be missed greatly.

TJ was my Tai Chi student for many years, and all of us at 8Tigers Academy of Tai Chi loved having her in our class each week. She will be missed

Takako Michii served as a docent at the Burchfield Penney Art Center for many years. Takako joined us in 2008 as a member of the Landmark Docent Class. During her tenure Takako taught us many things not the least of which was the importance of grace and beauty in one´s life. She was someone who never feared standing firm in her beliefs, although always kind and patient with those who had a different perspective. Of all the gifts she gave to us my favorite and most memorable one was learning the art of Ikebana, the centuries-old Japanese art of flower arranging. Takako gave lessons on Ikebana to fellow docents and did a teacher´s workshop on the art during the exhibition Burchfield Botanicals.

Although Takako has not been active for some time, she will be missed; her passing is a sad reminder of not only the fleeting nature of life but also the importance of the people in one´s own.

With kindest thoughts of a truly lovely lady.

Dr. Michii was always giving.
When Buffalo and Kanazawa were celebrating an anniversary in Kanazawa with the BPO performing under the baton of Paul Ferington my family and I were privileged to be in attendance! We stayed an extra week with Dr. Michii as our tour guide! No better tour could ever be organized.
We will always remember when the Michii's were invited over for Thanksgiving she always bought a scrumptious sushi tray. East met west at that dinner table.
You will be missed and remembered fondly!
