Jie Yang Obituary

Jie Yang

South Burlington - Jie Yang, 64, died unexpectedly of cardiovascular complications at his longtime home in South Burlington, Vermont on October 10, 2020. He was born on April 26, 1956 in An Shan, China to Yang Yu Ying and Chen Shi Ming. A man of great intellect, Jie received his Bachelor's degree in Physics from Nanjing University in 1982. Due to placing 2nd place in the CUSPEA exam, one of the greatest accomplishments as a Chinese college student at the time, Jie won a full scholarship to Princeton University for his PhD in Physics which he completed in 1987. Afterwards, he conducted his postdoctoral research at the University of Chicago, furthered his research at the University of Virginia, and then eventually became a tenured professor of physics at the University of Vermont.

Jie was a considerate man who was always happy and at peace. He was a role model for healthy living who enjoyed morning runs and hikes with his family and friends. Following those activities, Jie could often be found relaxing on the couch either watching sports or reading history books. He especially loved watching the Patriots and talking about football with his son.

More than anything else, Jie will be remembered for being a loving and dedicated family man. He is survived by his wife Lijiang Lee Wang, son Jeffrey Yang, daughter Kailey Yang, the families of his sisters Yang Ying and Yang Pin, and extended families on his wife's side. He cherished holidays with his sister-in-law Yaping Wang's Boston-based family. He provided love and support for his wife's career at IBM, and it was his greatest pride to see his son graduate from Princeton and his daughter studying at MIT. He did everything to protect his family, guide them towards their goals, and provide an environment full of joy.

It was such a shock to hear Jie passed away at the peak of his career and life. It was still so vivid to remember his unreserved smile and humorous words when we were preparing to go abroad in our English training, his visit with other schoolmates to our humble home (with all sleeping on the floor), and his warm reception of our first visit to Princeton. His optimism is always encouraging and infectious to everybody around, and his image will forever live in our memory and accompany us with our lives. Jie, will be with us for ever!

I would not be where I am today if not for Jie Yang. He advised my senior thesis at UVM, and it evolved into a masters thesis. He set me up for success, and we wrote a manuscript together. He took me to Seattle to present it at a large conference, exposing me to science and shaping my career. I would not be the academic I am today if Jie hadn't given me the opportunity to thrive in his lab.
He taught me so much. But on top of this he was great fun to be around. I still remember some of our conversations, his quotes, and his lectures. And of course I remember his smile.
I have much I could say, but I will keep this short. I will just say that I feel so lucky he was briefly in my life. He will always be part of my life story. I have great sympathy for his family having lost Jie. But I hope they can find peace remembering all the time they did get to spend with him. He is a wise and kind soul.

Dr. Jie Yang started me on my career as an academic. I did my senior thesis with him, and it turned into a masters thesis. We published a paper together. He taught me how to write a science paper. He took me to Seattle to present the work at a conference, exposing me to how science works. It changed my life. I would not be where I am today if not for Jie. He was patient and wise, and gave me a chance to flourish. More importantly, he set me up for success. I owe so much to Jie.
But besides his amazing mentorship and passing on of his knowledge, he was also so fun to be around. I loved talking to him. Our time together went quickly, but I will never forget Jie. In fact, I can still remember some of his quotes and lectures. I am forever grateful he is part of my life.
My deepest sympathies to his families for losing him. It is a tragedy to lose such a wonderful person. I hope they can find peace in being able to share as much time as they had with soul a kind and wise soul.

Dear Lee (Lijiang), I'm very sorry to hear of your husbands passing. We pray you and your family get through the healing process together. We never met Jie but know you spoke very highly of him during out walks at lunch time. Please don't hesitate to reach out for anything.
God Bless you and your family!
Sincerely
Steve and JoAnne

Dear Lijiang and family, we are at a loss of words to comfort you. Although we did not know Jie in person very well, we knew him a lot from many friends that he was such a gentle and caring man. May Jie Rest In Peace.

A great man and friend, Jie helped me a lot to settle down when I arrived US for the first time. I have not seen him for many years and been looking for him. He is such a gentle and loving person and surely will find peace in heaven.
