MILDRED AKINS Obituary

MILDRED ELIZABETH AKINS BURLINGTON - Mildred Elizabeth Akins passed away on Thursday, Jan. 21, 2010, peacefully in her own home, at the age of 98. Ms. Akins was a beloved and well-respected educator in Burlington for over 50 years. She was born in Ticonderoga, N.Y. on Nov. 5, 1911, the daughter of David Akins and Sarah Thatcher Akins. Her father was Chief Engineer of the steamboat Ticonderoga. The family had long ties to Vermont and New York State, including their ancestor, Seth Warner, a Green Mountain Boy. Ms. Akins was a member of the Burlington High School Class of 1928 and graduated With Honors from the University of Vermont with her Bachelor's of Arts in 1932, and her Master's of Education in 1962. Ms. Akins, "Millie" and "Mimi" to her family and many friends, pursued a love of teaching, learning, and mentoring as a teacher and scholar throughout her life. She taught school during the height of the Great Depression in Jeffersonville and later in Wallingford, Vt., Bristol, R.I. and North Plainfield, N.J., before joining the History Department as a faculty member at Burlington High School. Ms. Akins was a John Hay Fellow at Northwestern University and Colorado State University, and also studied and researched at the University of Maine at Orono and Indiana University. She was a member of Alpha Xi Delta Sorority, Mortar Board, and Honorary Society Delta Kappa Gamma. Ms. Akins was an inspiring and caring teacher to decades of Burlington High School students, served as a Department and school administrator, as well as being a wellloved mentor to many young teachers and staff. She retired in 1984, after more than five decades of teaching. Ms. Akins is remembered for her intellectual curiosity, love of history and literature, and ability to spark greater knowledge and appreciation of language, writing, and reading among young people. Ms. Akins' legacy and love of learning, education, and service also live on through her family. Multiple generations of Akins' family and extended family now work in education and public service careers with diverse organizations including Duke University, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Harvard University, Wellesley College, Colchester Schools, A Better Chance, College Summit, the United States Air Force, the Humane Society of the United States, the Environment Protection Agency, the United States Government, and others. An avid reader of history, current affairs, and fiction throughout her life, Ms. Akins often read several books each week. She also had a great love of travel and with her dear friend and fellow teacher, L. Lucille White, enjoyed many special trips to Scotland and England, Europe, China, Japan, the Holy Land and Jordan, Hawaii, and around the United States, beginning in the 1930s. Each time, she learned as much as she could about different parts of the world and enjoyed sharing her books, photographs, and learning with others. She was also a wonderful cook and baker, and family and friends especially enjoyed her special birthday cakes and holiday fudge, each year. Ms. Akins enjoyed being with her family and friends at the family's former camp, at Thayer's Bay on Lake Champlain, and in other places with loved ones, including North Carolina, Washington, D.C., Germany, and Switzerland. Ms. Akins is especially remembered for her kindness and compassion, sense of humor, interest in others, love of animals, enjoyment of beautiful places, and love for her family and friends. She often made new friends each year, including in the last years of her life. In her final years, Ms. Akins greatly appreciated the loving care of Polly Yandow, Kathi Dastalto, Alle, Pamela, June Robare, Peggy Park, Donna and Martin Waldron, the palliative care nurses from the Vermont Visiting Nurse Association, and other supportive friends. Ms. Akins was predeceased by her beloved sister, Margaret Akins Lanou; her niece Linda Lanou McCarthy; and her brother Howard S. Akins. Ms. Akins is survived by her dearest friend, L. Lucille White; and a loving extended family: her niece, Leslie Lanou Bigoness; great nieces, Lindsay Meade Bigoness, Jennifer D. McCarthy, Allison Akins McCarthy Rafter, Kathan B. McCarthy, and Ellary McCarthy Catino; nephews, William J. Bigoness and James E. McCarthy; great nephews, Devin William Bigoness, Harrison Lanou Rafter, and Ian McCarthy; and other family members and friends. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Mark's Roman Catholic Church on Monday, Jan. 25, at 11 a.m. Burial will follow at Resurrection Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Visiting Nurse Association of Chittenden and Grand Isle, 110 Prim Road, Colchester, VT 05446 or Vermont Home Share, 412 Farrell Street, South Burlington, VT 05403-4466. I took four courses from Miss Akins. She was one of the best teachers I ever had, not only at BHS but anywhere, and a kind and interesting person.

One of the wisest and most open-minded teachers I've ever had, Miss Akins has been in my thoughts often since I graduated in 1965. Thank you for inspiring a love of history.

When I recall my years at BHS (class of 1970), the first teacher that comes to mind is Miss Akins. She was my ideal teacher-smart, inspiring, caring and fun. How lucky we were to have her, however briefly, in our lives!

Miss Akins is definitely the teacher I remember most from BHS ('70). I believe I took her Western Heritage class my senior year, and she enthusiastically encouraged my curiosity about philosophy, and she was the first to introduce me to William James, whose work has had a continuing powerful influence on my life-long education.

Unfortunately, I never met her again after graduation, but am long since reminded of her sharp and humorous curiosity, seeming so much like a scholarly Julia Child, with an infinite taste for knowledge. Having just noted her own culinary exploits from the present obit, I can’t help imagine that Millie might be amused, as well, with the comparison.

May her spirit soar for all eternity!

She was among those special teachers who affect eternity for the sparks carry on through her students' students. I am so grateful she taught us so rigorously in BHS Class of 1952.

What a shining light she was, as a teacher, a role model, a caring person. She and Miss White inspired me to major in American History and Literature at Harvard College. How fortunate I was to have studied with both of them.
I will remember her with loving gratitude.

I am a 1970 graduate of BHS and remember Ms. Akins fondly. My siblings recommended her class to me. It was a tough class, but so worthwhile - she was one of the best.

Miss Akins inspired our class with her tremendous energy, knowledge of history, bright mind, sense of humor and passion for teaching. She had a great smile. My condolences to her family and to Miss White, whom I was not fortunate to have but my family was.

I took a class with Miss Akins; I think it was "Our Western Heritage" - it's listed along with her bona fides in the "Oread", and it sounds familiar. So many years ago. Yet, the other day, her countenance sprang from the page, not much changed from the face I remembered.

My short, treasured journey with Millie began as a part-time caregiver, cooking meals a few times a week for her and Lucille. I came to adore her a great deal and love her with all my heart. She was a lady of wisdom and was very stylish, even in the last years of her life. It gave me great pride and pleasure to have had the opportunity to get to know her. I can only imagine how all her students felt to have her as a teacher and fortunate they truly were to have such a determined, caring educator.

Millie was one of the best people I had the priviledge of taking care of & getting to know. It was a joy to be her caregiver. She was a lady in the truest sense, a most fascinating intellectual woman by many accounts, a dear & darling friend to many. I loved talking to her about anything from my 3 year old child's latest antics to the weather, current events and philosophies of life. She was a genuinely rare gem & I came to love her like a family member. The world has suffered the loss of another truly great & wonderful Angel.

Ms Akins was my history teacher senior year at Burlington High School in 1960-61. I'll always remember discussing the news of the week in review in the Sunday New York Times that we subscribed to. She was a wonderful teacher and the source of good memories.

Another wonderful teacher was her dear friend Ms White-my English teacher sophomore year.

I graduated from BHS in 1976, and I remember Ms. Akins (I suppose I called her Miss Akins then) from AP U.S. History. She was one of the teachers that I couldn't fool with what I thought then was my dazzling gift for B.S. She was tough and exacting, and I think of her often, especially when I need to consult a grammar or style reference. She forced me to raise my own standards, and I can't think of a better gift from a teacher. Thank you, Miss Akins, for everything you did for me.

Millie Akins not only had a true and passionate vocation as a teacher, she was a high priestess of education. We shall always be grateful for her generous and selfless devotion to her students. And for the fact that every day she entered the classroom, she carried a palpable enthusiasm for the life of the mind.

Ms. White, our thoughts are with you.

I graduated from BHS in 1971. Miss Akins was an outstanding teacher who gave her students a solid foundation in American History and a love of learning. When I went to college, I found that her high academic standards prepared me for the challenges ahead. I saw her several years ago at the grocery store and told her how much I appreciated all she had given me as a teacher. Her eyes filled with tears because she had such a love and respect for all of her students. Rest in peace, Miss Akins.

I graduated from BHS in 1974 and Miss Akins stands out in my memory as an outstanding teacher who taught us how to think. She had high standards and we did our best to meet them. She obviously cared about her students and was truly a remarkable mentor. May she rest in peace.

As a 1952 graduate of Burlington High School, I had Mildred Akins as my teacher for U.S. history when I was a senior. She was a dedicated teacher and taught a fairly comprehensive course. It was a good background for the American intellectual history course that I took in college. I won't forget her.

I have very special memories of "Aunt Millie" from my young years. Millie lived with our family when she taught in Jeffersonville in the early 1930s. My Dad, George Bicknell, was the Principal of Cambridge High School there and Millie and my parents became lifelong friends. I was a toddler then and was taught to call her Aunt Millie. She was a dear part of my past and although I hadn't seen her for several years I will always remember her fondly.

Miss Akins, you were one of the greatest!!

Miss Akins was an inspiring teacher with a substantial grasp of U.S. history, combined with an uncommon ability to identify and explain the key themes in its development. I owe her a great debt.

It is because of Miss Akins, that today, fifty years later, I still have a passion for U.S. history. She tolerated my numerous book reports on the Lewis and Clark expedition, a subject I was so excited about. She encouraged me to find more information at the UVM library, which I did. At her suggestion, I ended my series of reports with the expedition reaching the Pacific , as we did not have time for me to continue the reports about their return trip ! Millie was one of the best teachers I had.

A dedicated, kind but demanding history teacher at Burlington High School, "Miss Akins" helped me and hundreds (1,000s?) survive and thrive at BHS.

She was one of my most memorable teachers from BHS . She loved and knew American History , as I do now , but didn't then .... I squandered the opportunity to learn , but eventually got the message . " thank you , Millie "
