Edward D. Fullerton, 89, of Zelienople died Tuesday at UPMC Passavant Hospital, McCandless Township.
Born March 21, 1920, in Pittsburgh, he was the son of the late James and Josephine Zak Fullerton.
He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran serving as a sergeant with the first battalion of Darby's Rangers in the Northern African Campaign. Darby's Rangers originally trained with the British Commandos and then rushed to North Africa for the invasion. Sgt. Fullerton was awarded the Purple Heart after being wounded by a grenade.
Mr. Fullerton retired in 1982 from Conrail, Eastern Division, where he had been a locomotive engineer for 43 years.
He was a member of St. Gregory Catholic Church, Zelienople.
He is survived by his wife, Helen (Bukovic) Fullerton, who he married May 18, 1946; four children, James J. Fullerton and his wife, Janet, of Pittsburgh, Daniel E. Fullerton and his wife, Maureen, of Zelienople, Timothy M. Fullerton of Cranberry Township and Christine Miller and her husband, Gary, of Zelienople; and four grandchildren, Emily Fullerton, Ryan Fullerton, Mary Kate Fullerton and Caroline Miller.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Jack and James Fullerton.
FULLERTON - Friends of Edward D. Fullerton, who died Tuesday, March 31, 2009, will be received from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Boylan Funeral Home, 324 E. Grandview Ave., Zelienople. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m., Friday at St. Gregory Catholic Church, 2 W. Beaver St., Zelienople, with Father Robert M. Miller, officiating. Entombment will be in Christ Our Redeemer Cemetery, Ross Township.
