Eugene Glass Obituary

Eugene Glass

Frisco, TX - On Sunday, May 16, 2021, as Jesus ascended into heaven, he took one of his greatest angels with him, Eugene H. Glass (loved and known as Gene), as together they physically departed from this Earth. Gene enjoyed 94 wonderful years spent among us loving all of God's creation.

Gene was first gifted to this world on November 24, 1926, spending his childhood growing up on a small farm in Indiana, living and playing amongst nature, where his deep reverence for the natural world began. Although he was naturally a lover rather than a fighter, he was a patriot through and through, and was stationed on Ward Island in Corpus Christi, Texas, at the end of World War II. Eugene went on to study at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, graduating with degrees in Electrical and Mechanical Engineering where his life's work and passion began. He was happily married for more than 50 years to his soulmate, Marie Louise Hebbe Glass, whom he loved until the day he passed away. He reunited with her in the Heavens above on the date of his own Earthly departure. His legacy continues to live on through his two daughters, Malinda Passmore of Collinsville, Texas, and Emily Mitchell of Albuquerque, New Mexico, whom he deeply adored and cherished. His positive spirit, deep spirituality and love for humanity and animals alike, has been passed down to his three grandchildren, Arthur Nieuwoudt, Lynette Sullivan and Patrick Sullivan, as well as his great-granddaughter, and unborn great-grandson.

Gene enjoyed the science of astronomy and was a founding member of the Corpus Christi Astronomical Society and also actively supported the Rose-Hulman Astronomy Department over many years.

Gene understood that at the end, we all become stories. His passing is an acclamation to this teaching, as words could do his legacy no justice. Eugene knew no strangers, understanding that everyone that we come across has something to teach us. Until his last breath he always kept a positive spin on life because he knew how much power it held. He loved his country, and the people in it, no matter their race, religion, cultural or political differences: He could sit down with all of them with love and deep respect as he believed in the overall good of humanity.

Funeral Services were held on 5/21/2021 in private at Restland in Richardson, Texas where he was buried next to his soulmate on her birthday of May 21st.

I was so sorry to hear of Gene's passing. He was a great friend and supporter of the astronomy program at Rose-Hulman. His enthusiasm for astronomy was contagious and the students loved observing with him almost as much as he did.

I first met Gene at homecoming in 1992. I had just become the director of the observatory and he sought me out to ask how he could help. At that time, the observatory was scheduled to be demolished. With Gene's support we were able to revive the astronomy program and eventually build a new observatory. In Gene's honor and in recognition of his support we named an asteroid for him. Below is the citation from the International Astronomical Union.

32564 Glass Discovered 2001 Aug. 20 by C. Wolfe at Terre Haute.
Eugene Glass (b. 1926) is an amateur astronomer and loyal supporter of the Rose-Hulman Oakley Observatory, where this minor planet was discovered. The name was suggested by R. Ditteon.

A very kind and special man! He taught me so many things at the beginning of my career, which have blossomed and carried on with me.

Memory Eternal!

I had the pleasure if working with Gene for a few short years at the Colley Associates, I found him to always be very kind, positive, and patient. He was a good listener and seemed always genuinely interested in new things. I enjoyed getting to know him as an adult after hearing about his engineering skills as a child as he worked along side my father for many years. He was a great engineer and very well respected. My deepest sympathy to Emily and Malinda. I will always remember him.
