Hugh Wilkerson Obituary

Hugh W. Wilkerson, 80, of Lothian died of leukemia on Nov. 6, at his residence.

Mr. Wilkerson was born Dec. 12, 1927 in Frederick. He moved with his family to Philadelphia for a brief time, and returned to Frederick prior to moving to Bristol, now part of Lothian, in the early 1930's. He was raised in Bristol, attended Owensville Elementary in West River, and graduated from Southern High School in Lothian in 1945.

He entered the US Army at the end of WWII, and served for several years. He attended Virginia Military Institute for a year, and later earned Bachelor of Science Degrees in Civil Engineering and Agriculture from the University of Maryland.

He married Nancy Selby on March 5, 1954, and they lived in Montgomery County, until moving to Bristol in the mid 1960's. He started Hugh Wilkerson and Associates Engineering and Surveyors, and operated his civil engineering and land survey company until his retirement in 1992.

He was a member of Wesley Chapel U.M. Church in Lothian, was a member and past vice president of the South A.A. County Democratic Club, volunteered at the Jug Bay Wetlands Sanctuary in Lothian and at the Captain Salem Avery Museum in Shady Side, and the South County Faith Network.

He founded the "Lil' Donkey's for Peace and Love", to assist "Doctors without Borders" and other worthwhile charities. He loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He also enjoyed woodworking and home projects, and nature.

Hugh was preceded in death by his wife Nancy S. Wilkerson in 1989; and two sons William E. and Michael A. Wilkerson.

He is survived by five daughters, Debra Jackson, Pamela Spicknall, Bonnie Turley, Sandra and Mary Wilkerson; one son, Robert Wilkerson; two sisters, Jean Grimes and Nancy Buck; one brother, Wayne Wilkerson; and eight grandchildren.

Friends may call at Rausch Funeral Home, P.A., 8325 Mt. Harmony Lane, Owings, on Mon., Nov. 10 from 1 to 2 p.m. Funeral services will follow at 2:00 p.m. Interment will be private.

Memorial contributions may be made to Wesley Chapel U.M. Church, 1010 Wrighton Road, Lothian, MD 20711.

Arrangements are by Rausch Funeral Home, Owings.
