Richard G. Young, 72, a 23-year resident of Crownsville, died of pulmonary fibrosis Feb. 6 at Anne Arundel Medical Center.
Mr. Young was born May 26, 1936, in Watertown, N.Y., to Russell and Gladys Bellinger Young. He was known as "Dick" in Watertown and "Snoop" in Md. and many other places in the world. He graduated from Watertown High School in 1954 and from Canton ATI in 1956 with a major in Agriculture.
After serving three years in the U.S. Army Security Agency, primarily in Germany, he went to work at the National Security Agency in 1960. While with the NSA, he lived in Harrogate, England for three years. He traveled extensively and was heavily involved with the creation of installations in Hawaii, Texas, Ga. and Md. He retired as a sr. executive in 1999 after 42 years of government service and was awarded the Director's Distinguished Service Medal among other honors presented by U.S. and U.K. officials. He was also presented the National Intelligence Distinguished Service Medal by the Deputy Director of Central Intelligence. He was previously the recipient of the Meritorious Civilian Service Award and the Exceptional Civilian Service Award. He was a contractor for CACI from 2000-08.
He was a summer resident of Silver Shores on Lake Ontario. He was a member of Baldwin United Methodist Church in Millersville, where he at one time held a variety of leadership positions and was a former member of Emmanuel Congregational Church in Watertown. His interests included gardening, genealogy, fishing and playing with his grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife, Wendy Vieser Young; one daughter, Jennifer Day of Stafford, Va.; one son, Richard G. Young Jr. of Fort Walton Beach, Fla.; three grandchildren, Skye, Brynn and Katarina Day; and one brother, Patrick Young of Sangerfield, N.Y.
Friends may visit from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Feb. 9 at Barranco and Sons, P.A., Severna Park Funeral Home, 495 Ritchie Highway. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Interment will be in the Watertown Cemetery at a later date.
