Robert Mayer Obituary

Robert H. "Bob" Mayer Jr., 76, of Arnold, Maryland passed away Saturday, November 12, 2022. He was born November 16, 1945, in Summit, New Jersey, to Robert and Muriel Mayer. Bob grew up in New Jersey with a love for sports and the beach. Bob graduated from the University of Delaware in 1969 with a Master of Science in Civil Engineering and went on to serve in the U.S. Navy's Civil Engineer Corps both active duty and reserves from 1976 – 1988. He was a Navy Diver and served as a Seabee on Underwater Construction Team 1 (UCT1). Following his academic passion and curiosity he returned to the University of Delaware and received his Ph.D. in 1982. After a short period as an Assistant Professor at the University of Colorado he returned to the east coast, accepting a position teaching Ocean Engineering at the United States Naval Academy. He taught at the Naval Academy for 35 years, including serving as the Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering Department Chair from 2004 – 2010 before retiring in 2018. Bob was a survivor of leukemia, undergoing a successful bone marrow transplant from his brother Kim, in 1989 at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. Bob was a member of Severna Park Evangelical Presbyterian Church. He is survived by his son, Rob (wife Leslie), grandchildren Tobey and Josie and his fiancée, Patricia Schupple (her children Daniel, Anya and grandson Tyler). In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The Leukemia And Lymphoma Society. A memorial service will be held in April in Annapolis, MD.

Remembering Bob on his first death anniversary. He was a very decent guy and a good friend. We studied together in Civil Engg Deptt at Univ of Delaware during 1966-69. Last time I personally met him was in 1997. But We kept in regular contact with each other until his sad demise in Nov last year. I felt very sad on losing a good friend. May Allah bless his soul with eternal peace. Amen

Bob was a family friend since early 70s, he was a counselor at our 4 H camp, he continued being a friend of our family and supporter while attending the University of Delaware. He always kept us informed of his adventures while serving in the Navy. His letters were always so beautifully detailed, his penmanship was impeccable.. I always enjoy hearing from him.. We always kept up with each other´s adventures.. he was such a wonderful person to know. Prayers for everyone who loved him..

I was very sorry to hear of Bob's passing. He was a very kind soul. I always enjoyed talking with Bob. He lived just up the street from me, we attended the same church, both had dog, and both worked at the Academy, so there was always something to talk about. We would always stop to chat when we say each other on the street, in church, and at the gym. A few years ago we were in the same sunday school class; it was an on-line class via zoom. When Bob first joined the class, he couldn't figure out how to change his name, so he showed up a "iPhone". He also couldn't get the camera to work, so he was a mystery person. But then he answered a question from the leader of the class, I recognized his voice and said "Bob is that you" to which he replied "yes". For the rest of the class he was know as "iPhone Bob".

What a joyful spirit Bobby had! He was my beloved cousin, always keeping me informed of extended family news. God surely loved him into heaven as we mourn the loss of his physical presence.
