Edward Plumb Jr.

Edward L. (Ned) Plumb, Jr. September 2, 1918 June 15, 2017 Edward L. "Ned" Plumb, Jr. 98, of Bellefonte, passed away Thursday, June 15, 2017. Born on September 2, 1918, in Newton, Kansas, the son of E. Leroy Plumb and Helen Fox Plumb. In 1933, he moved to Bellefonte and graduated from BHS in 1936 and from the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy in 1940. After working one year in State Col lege, he was drafted in June of 1941. He was in the Army for four and a half years. Following basic training, he went to officers Candidates school and became a Captain. He was then sent to Camp Shelby Mississippi where the 98th Evacuation Hospital was being formed. Ned became detachment Commander and served in that capacity for the remainder of his service. His citations are New Guinea, So. Philippines Luzon, Philippines Liberation with one star, Asiatic-Pacific with three battle stars and WWII Victory Medal and American Campaign Medal. After coming home from Japan in December of 1945 he worked at Parrish Drug Store in Bellefonte for five years then he and his father bought White Brothers Store, which became Plumb's Drug Store, and he was there until his retirement in 1980. Over the years, many young people from area high schools had their first jobs at Plumb's Drug Store and remember that experience to this day. The soda fountain and the luncheonette were Bellefonte staples for years. Ned was a 66-year member and former President of Nittany Country Club. He was an avid golfer. He served and was chairman for several years on the Bellefonte Borough Parking Authority. In 2008, he was inducted into the Bellefonte Education Hall of Fame. He is survived by his wife of 70 years Janora (Grove) Plumb, a son, James (Susan) Plumb, twin daughters, Anne Faulkner and Margaret (Timothy) Van Sant, five grandchildren; Jennifer, Kathryn, Ellen, Amy, Steven, and four great-grandchildren; Logan,Elliott, Hazel and Wyatt. Friends will be received on Monday, June 19, 2017 from 10:00 until 11:00 am at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 134 E. Bishop Street, Bellefonte, PA 16823. A mass of Christian burial will be held at 11:00 am at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Bellefonte, with Father George Jakopac officiating. Burial will follow at Centre County Memorial Park in State College. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Bellefonte Centre County Library at 200 N Allegheny St., Bellefonte, PA 16823 or to St. John's Evangelist Catholic School at 116 E Bishop St., Bellefonte, PA 16823.
