Frederick Riley Obituary

Frederick Leroy Riley, Jr. July 4, 1950 of rural Centre Hall Fred's journey to be with our Heavenly Father began March 14, 2011. His devout Christian faith guided him through difficult days with his recent illness. Fred is survived at home by his wife, Lisa Ann (Walker) Riley. Fred is the son of Frederick L. Riley and Marjorie Jane (Thomas) Riley of Clearfield, who preceded him. Also surviving are his sister, Karen (Ernie) Weicht, of Nanjemoy, Md., his brother, Thomas (Lila) Riley, of West Bloomfield, Mich., and nephews, Jeffrey, David, Timothy, and Ethan Riley, along with his aunt, Fern Pillifant, of Midland, Mich. He is the son-in-law of Ray A. and Joyce K. Walker, also of rural Centre Hall. He is the brother-in-law of Chip (Carol) Walker, of Pleasant Gap and known as Uncle Fred to Brian (Kelley) Walker and their daughter, Liadan, of Bellefonte and Michael (Bonnie) Walker and their daughter, Payton, and son, Henry, of Centre Hall. Fred was a gentle encourager to all who knew him. His athleticism allowed him to be chosen to the Pennsylvania All State basketball team while at Clearfield High School. He was selected for the NAIA All American basketball team and inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame while attending Edinboro University of PA. Fred was an educator and coach. He ran many marathons and also participated locally on several fast pitch softball teams. Fred reached his ultimate dream of becoming a scratch golfer this past summer. In his words, "I've lived 60 wonderful years and am at peace in God's grace." Arrangements for cremation are made with Wetzler Funeral Service Inc. in Bellefonte. A notice will be posted on CaringBridge.org for a celebration of Fred's life. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Fred's honor may be made to HomeNursingAgency.com (450 Windmere Drive, State College, PA 16801) or to WoundedWarriorProject.org (WWP, PO Box 758516, Topeka, KS 66675-8516).

Sorry to learn of Freds passing. I was a basketball teammate of his at Edinboro. He was sooo good as I had to try and defend against him in practices. Alot of well deserved credit went to him as we won our district 18 championship for the rights to go to Kansas City for the NAIA National Tournament in 1972. Lots of great memories of him and his ever present smile and good words.

Lisa,
I just learned about Fred, and it makes me sad for you and those he touched. I only met him once, and he seemed to make you very happy. Hugs going out to you, my old friend.

To the Fred Riley family,
I am sorry for your loss. I too am a CHS 1968 graduate. Fred & I were the backcourt combination (guards) on the team for our Junior('67) & Senior ('68) seasons. He was a terrific ballplayer, friend and classmate. On the baseball diamond, Fred and I were the double play combo (shortstop and second baseman) for our Junior('67) & Senior ('68) seasons, he made me a better player with his intensity and love of the competition. He was special and touched us all !

Dear Lisa Ann, how I remember Fred during our difficult negotiation times in Keystone Central School District. He led us to a very good contract. He was conscience, sharp dresser, a real gentleman. May his soul and all the recent souls of faithful teachers rest in peace. Amen.

To the family of Fred...I was extremely saddened to read about Fred's passing. He and I were teammates on the '65/'66 Clearfield Area High basketball squad. Back in those days freshman were not eligible to play so it wasn't until I was a senior that Fred was able to play as a sophomore. From the time Coach Thorn introduced us that summer ('65) I never once saw Fred anywhere without a basketball tucked under his arm. I am fairly certain he took it to bed with him, so it wouldn't suprise me at all if he took it to church with him. I remember one Saturday evening as we were going into the Ritz theater (single screen in those days) when there comes Freddy dribbling the ball down the walk. He was heading home from the Y. I said, "Fred, you need to get a girlfriend!" Anyway, as I look back on those times it was obvious that even at that innocent age he had the confidence, drive and personality to be successful at whatever pathway life was going to take him down. If he coached and mentored as he played then his standards of expectations were set high. As a result, I have no doubt that the hundreds of young people whose lives he touched over the years owe a considerable amount of their success to Fred. I'll leave you now knowing as I will that you will forever have memories of a man full of life and enthusiasm...He will live on in the hearts of all that he touched! My deepest condolences.

Dear Lisa,
When we were getting ready for the CHS Class of 1968's 60th birthday party last year, I spoke with Mike Lytle and got Fred's phone number. We had a most pleasant conversation, and he made plans to play round ball with a group of former Saint Francis High School Ponies who still shoot around. I'm so sorry that didn't happen. I know that somewhere in Heaven, Fred and former CHS teammate Jim Eshelman are shooting hoops. You have my sincere sympathy on the loss of a fine man. PTL you will be reunited at the end of all things! Wishing you strength today and patience for the wait.

Although I have not seen Fred in many years, I have never forgotten what a fine man and friend he was. He honored us by being a groomsman in our June '76 wedding. Fred was an inspiration to all who knew him. God has chosen an earthly angel for his kingdom. Lisa, my prayers are with you at this difficult time.

I remember Fred as an outstanding basketball coach at LHU. Most recently I had the opportunity to play golf with him in the senior events sponsored by NCPGA. He was an outstanding player, but more important he was a true gentlmen and loved life and golf. I was shocked to hear of his passing, I will miss not seeing his smiling face this summer. My thoughts and prayers go out to all those who loved and cared about Fred.

My heartfelt wishes and sympathy go out to the entire family. I knew Fred Riley, Coach, as a player and more importantly as a friend. It's been my time as an adult and parent that I can reflect back and see the special impact Coach had on my life. I have, at times, visualized him while trying to use some of those lessons learned on the basketball court when talking to or instructing other student-athletes. I have also been able to apply those same lessons to myself over the years not only when exercising or playing sports but also to the work place and life in general. I want the family to know I enjoyed the time I spent with Coach during my latter years at Bald Eagle Nittany High School (Class of '83) and will always remember him and the 'life' contributions he gave to me. Coach, may you rest in peace.

I played for Coach Riley at Lock Haven High from 1974 thru 1977. He brought out the best in his players. He was one of the purest shooters I have ever witnessed. He had an enormeous impact on shaping my life.

Dear Coach, There are very few days that go by that I don't think of you and the positive impact you had on me as a young man growing up. You always found a way to get the best out of me and I'll always be grateful for that. In return, I've spent the last 15 years as a teacher/coach myself passing on the same lessons to my players. Although our methods might be different!!!!! : ) The message always the same! You will be missed.
