Paul Dorner Obituary

Paul V. Dorner July 6, 1928 July 14, 2014 Paul V. Dorner, 86, of Bedford, died Monday, July 14, 2014, at Donahoe Manor Nursing Home. He was born on July 6, 1928, in Jersey Shore, a son of the late Fredrick J. and Celia (Sullivan) Dorner, he was the last surviving member of his family. On July 28, 1956, in Bedford, he married Patricia (Hixon) Dorner, who survives along with the three sons: David, married to the former Mary Walton, of Bedford, John Dorner, and fiancee, Jean Clark, of Cumberland, Md., and Mark Dorner, married to the former Stacy Ferguson, of State College; three grandchildren: Shane, Kamryn, and Brady. He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Kalyn Dorner; and two brothers: James and Edward Dorner. Paul attended Avis Schools, which closed during WWII, and graduated from Jersey Shore High School in 1946. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1948 until 1952, reaching the rank of Staff Sergeant. He was privileged to serve as personal body guard to two presidents, Harry S. Truman, and Dwight D. Eisenhower during his military service. Paul enlisted in the Pennsylvania State Police on December 15, 1952, serving in Bedford, Blair, Huntington, and Centre Counties. He retired in 1981, after 29 years of service, with the rank of Sergeant. In January 1982, through 1986, he was employed by the District Attorney's Office in Bedford, as the Chief County Detective, and in 1986, he was appointed Court Administrator by the Honorable Daniel Howsare. He retired from Bedford County in July of 1992. Paul was a member of the St. Thomas Catholic Church, of Bedford, a life member of the Bedford Elks Lodge #1707, American Legion Post #8, member of the Retired State Police Association of PA, and the Frederick Sutton Memorial Lodge #57. He was also a former member of the Court Administrators Association of PA, and the Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, July 17, 2014, at 10:00 a.m., at the St. Thomas Catholic Church, in Bedford, with Father Donald Dusza, Celebrant. Burial at St. Thomas Catholic Cemetery, with burial rites conducted by the Pennsylvania State Police Honor Guard. Friends will be received on Wednesday, from 5-8 p.m., at the Timothy A. Berkebile Funeral Home in Bedford, where a vigil for the deceased will be held on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m., at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, those wishing may make contributions to the Paul V.
