I have previously thanked Mrs. Shirley Stanton for her outstanding service to the College of business. I do so once again, albeit rather briefly, in order to avoid "the loss institutional memory". Shirley deserves continued recognition for her outstanding service to the College of Business' students during the College's foundational years. As a former graduate student, I remember her so very well and fondly. Thank you once again Mrs. Stanton.

I remember meeting Mrs. Stanton the first time I walked into the College of Business my freshman year in 1978. I was a confused freshman, not sure what I wanted to do, but knowing that I had to change my major and majoring in business appealed to me. She was so magnetic and I knew right then that I wanted to change my major to business. She guided me through the process, which was not easy to do as the school was closed due to a large influx of students like myself transferring from other majors. She took such a personal interest in each student. I loved talking with her and getting her feedback on every possible course and professor there was. My fraternity brothers and I called "Dean Stanton". She was a major positive force for me at a point in my life when I lacked direction, caring & guidance. I am grateful to have known & been guided by her.

As a 1960s graduate student at Penn State's College of Business in Boucke Building, I shall never forget Shirley Stanton. Student academic advisors did not come any better than Shirley Stanton in the 1960s, and they are unlikely to come any better than Shirley Stanton if she were still in service in our new Business Building today. Shirley Stanton was an effective academic advisor. Shirley Stanton was a wonderful human being. A beautiful example under so many important headings. Charlie Smith

As a graduate student in Boucke Building at Penn State in the 1960s, I remember Shirley Stanton fondly and well. I remember her standing (not sitting) behind her desk as she welcomed, counseled and advised an unending line of students on a daily basis. And with her pleasant and encouraging personality, it was obvious that the students did not want to be advised by anybody other than their beloved Mrs. Shirley Stanton. Shirley Stanton was very clearly an important asset of Penn State's College of Business from 1957 to 1982. Charlie Smith

I hardly know how to express my feelings about Shirley death. She was a wonderful friend and neighbor to the Poschadel family. Later she was again a wonderful help and friend as Chris and I were married and moved to Centre Hall. I (Dottie) will always remember her spectacular gardens, African Violets and the tennis we played. She will always live in my heart and soul. Peace Dottie and Chris Roberts

Mrs. Stanton, I can picture you happily tending God's lovely gardens. You surely will enjoy doing that.

Tears came to my eyes as I read the obituary in the CDT. Shirley Stanton (Mrs. Stanton!!!!) was the first person I met in the College of Business Administration's Boucke Building at Penn State when I arrived on campus to begin studies for my MS (Business-Accounting) degree in 1960. As an International student from South Africa I felt quite insecure as I faced an uncertain future, and Shirley's pleasant, supportive approach to mentoring students made a significant contribution to setting my mind at ease.
I returned to South Africa after graduation in 1961, and then came back to Penn State for the Ph.D program in 1964. And what a pleasant surprise it was to see Shirley still at work as a mentor for the CBA's students - in the same pleasant, supportive manner as I had observed in 1960/61.
I shall never forget Shirley Stanton. She was a lovely person, and a beautiful human being.

I had the great pleasure to work with Shirley at the Business College in the mid-1970's. During her career she provided advice to thousands of students seeking guidance on such matters as selecting the proper courses, scheduling a particular professor, or perhaps improving your golf or tennis game.
Among those many students were countless student athletes, including academic All-Americans, future Hall of Famers, and future business leaders. She encouraged each and every one to make the most of their educational opportunities.
Every student who sought her advice received the very best that she could provide. On those occasions when a student was seeking a way around the rules and requirements, she could scold them lovingly with an icy glance over the top of her glasses. To many students of that era, she was affectionately and respectfully thought of as the Mother of the Business College. She was part of why Penn State was a great place to grow up.

Ken, Brooke and I were so sorry to hear of Shirley's passing. We have so many fond memories of renting from the Stantons for 14 years....trimming those fruit trees, enjoying the flowers, building snowmen, playing in the yard, enjoying produce from Shirley's garden, visiting the cats....too many memories to name. Our thoughts are with you, Lon, during this difficult time. Gale, Ken and Brooke
