James Gravely Obituary
A son of the late Edward Jefferson Gravely and Margaret Elizabeth McCoy Gravely, Jim was born February 11, 1942 in Wilmington, NC. He attended UNC-Chapel Hill where he completed his undergraduate studies and then furthered his education receiving a PhD in Philosophy from Tulane University. His continued keen interest in learning afforded him the ability to speak six languages. He was also an accomplished violinist who performed for a time with the Charlotte Symphony.
Jim is remembered for his love for books, as well as his vast collection of model trains. He also had a special place in his heart for cats.
Much loved by his family, Jim is survived by his sister, Nancy Gravely Biggers; and his brother-in-law, Oren A. Biggers; as well as his nephews, Oren E. Biggers and wife Miranda, and Brant Biggers and wife Anne; and great-nephews and great-nieces, Ellis, E. J., Lizzy and Margaret Biggers.
A service to celebrate Jim's life will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, May 7th in Harry & Bryant's "Chapel in the Oaks", 500 Providence Road. His family will receive friends at the funeral home following the service. Jim will be interred with his parents and his infant brother, Thomas Edward Gravely, in Sharon Memorial Park.
Special thanks is extended to the staff of Brookdale East and Levine & Dickson Hospice for the compassionate care given to Jim, as well as the consideration they afforded his family during his illness.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are requested to be made to Levine & Dickson Hospice House, 11900 Vanstory Dr., Huntersville, NC 28078.

Jim and I were cousins, and the time we were students at Chapel Hill overlapped. I remember Jim as a Renaissance Man in the true sense of the word. The breadth of his knowledge was incredible, including topics as diverse as philosophy, theology, military history (especially World War I), and of course, his favorite subject, history and technology of the railroads. We kept in touch over the years since Chapel Hill. By telephone we had numerous interesting conversations that I will remember forever. These moments will remain a tribute to an intellect second to none.
