Julia Carney Obituary

Julia Sullivan Carney, 87, of Charlotte, peacefully passed away on May 13, 2002 after a brief illness. She was blessed as she died in her home of 57 years in the presence of her three surviving children, son Mr. Eugene J. Carney, Jr., son Mr. George M. Carney, and daughter Ms. Julia Anne Carney, all of Charlotte. With her death she joins our Heavenly Father as well as her beloved husband Eugene and son Robert.
In addition to her children, she is survived by son Gene's wife, Becky and 6 loving grandchildren: Monica Carney, a rising senior at NC State University; Johnathan Fisher of Los Angeles; Kelly Fisher Ashman of Charlotte; Brandy Fisher of Raleigh; Kevin Gullette and wife, Jennifer of Charlotte; and Brian Gullette and wife, Beth of Charlotte. She touched the lives as well of her 5 dear great-grandchildren, Lincoln, Haleigh, Daisy, Benjamin, and Rebecca Jane. She is survived by her sisters, Bernice Magee of Charlotte and Eva Currie of Rockingham, NC.
She was preceded in death by her siblings, Raymond Sullivan, Jordan Sullivan, George Sullivan, Madge Garrison, Linelle Dawkins, Eleanor Garmon, and Polly Anna Sullivan.
Born June 7, 1914 in Rockingham, NC, it was her adventurous spirit as a young woman that brought her to Charlotte in search of a business degree. Soon thereafter she settled for good in the Queen City when she met the love of her life, Eugene Joseph Carney, Sr., a successful business entrepreneur. However, their time together as husband and wife was short as Gene's untimely death in 1960 left her to raise their young family of four children alone.
Her enduring spirit was evident not only at home with her family, but also on the golf course with her many friends. She was a longtime member of Myers Park Country Club, Carolina Golf and Country Club, and the Surf Club of North Myrtle Beach. She was also a charter member of the NC Senior Women's Golf Association. Even in her golden years, if she wasn't playing Bridge or attending her weekly Bingo outings, you would most likely find her on the golf course. While she may never have broken 80, Julia always was on par in the game of life.
She was a long-standing member of St. Patrick Cathedral in Charlotte, and a proud supporter of the ARC of Mecklenburg County.
The family will be receiving friends at Julia's home on Friday from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. A memorial service will be held Saturday at St. Patrick Cathedral at 7:00 p.m.
Memorials may be made in her honor to the Nevins Center Foundation, 3523 Nevin Road, Charlotte, NC 28269.
Heritage Funeral Home is serving the family of Mrs. Carney.
