Marion Gaither
'Bookie'
Mr. Marion 'Bookie' Gaither, son of the late Judge Gaither and Eula Ferguson Gaither, was born on March 3, 1933 in Charlotte, North Carolina. He departed this earthly life on Friday, December 31, 2010 at Golden Living Center.
Marion was educated in the public schools of Mecklenburg County and attended Central Piedmont Community College. He served in the United States Army and was awarded the Korean Services Medal, United Nations Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal and Meritorious Unit Commendation.
Marion started working at 14 years old as a labor and brick mason. He was a custodian for Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. He retired in 1997 from the Charlotte Observer where he was employed for 20 years. After retirement, Marion worked for OneSource as a custodian at Charlotte Douglas Airport, until he became ill in 2004.
Marion touched the lives of many people with his smile, wisdom, sense of humor and faith all the way to the end. He enjoyed drinking coffee with friends at meetings, Waffle House and while playing Bingo. He also enjoyed laughing at 'The Jerry Springer Show' and 'The Steve Harvey Morning Show.'
Marion was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Catherine Kearns Gaither; two sons, Ronnie Avery and Micheal Gaither; three sisters, Christen Sanders, Barbara Gaither, and Lillian Moore; and a brother, Sam Gaither, all of Charlotte, North Carolina.
He is survived by his second wife, Angela Wolfe-Gaither; two sons, Marion William Gaither of Charlotte, North Carolina and Marion Javis Gaither of Rock Hill, South Carolina; two daughters, Nancy Avery and Kathy D. Gaither, both of Charlotte, North Carolina; two stepchildren, Carolyn N. Wolfe of Rock Hill, South Carolina and Lance Corporal Oliver Wolfe Jr. II, all of Jacksonville, North Carolina; three sisters, Willette Hinton, Cleo Wilson and Betty Jo Gaither; brother, George Gaither, all of Charlotte, North Carolina; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral 1:00 p.m. Thursday, January 6, 2011 at Mt. Olive Presbyterian Church, 5125 Mt. Olive Church Rd., Charlotte, NC 28208. Visitation will be at 12:00 Noon at the church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
King's Funeral Home is assisting the Gaither Family.

Beloved Gaither Family, you have my sincere condolences and sympathy. I will always remember Uncle Marion's kindness and laughter; that soft spoken voice and his willingness to help anyone. Thank you Angela for giving your love and tireless compassion.
