Max Rollins Obituary

The world lost a gentleman and kind soul with the death of Max D. Rollins. He passed peacefully at Hospice House of Southminster on June 29th. Max was born on January 7th, 1927 in Grover, North Carolina to Hubert and Lillie Mae Rollins. He graduated from Kings Mountain High School and joined the Navy shortly thereafter. A Navy scholarship sent him to Yale University to begin his college education, which was completed at Presbyterian College in Clinton, SC, with a degree in Engineering. His career was spent as a Design Engineer with Bellsouth until his retirement in 1992. Not content in retirement, he became a home appraiser for several years and finally concluded his professional life as the Mayor of his hometown, Grover, NC.

Max was an avid hot rod and antique car lover/collector, with his passion truly being for '32 Fords, of which he had many over the years. Never willing to grow old, he joined several other men (much younger than he) for a cross-country road trip in a caravan of '32 Fords, when he was 87 years old. In addition, he was a sailing enthusiast and spent many hours on Lake Norman with friends and family. Other hobbies included woodworking and golf.

After many wonderful years as a couple, Max married his soulmate and ultimate love of his life, Joyce Erickson, in 2010. They were blissfully happy until her sudden passing in 2013. Max was also predeceased by his first wife, Vivian H. Rollins and is survived by his daughter, Malia Segal (Ricky) of Charlotte, grandson, Taylor Payne (Sara) of Syracuse, NY, and granddaughter, Chandler Holdenrid of Raleigh. He has also left behind many close friends who meant a great deal to him.

Memorial service to be held on Wednesday, July 6th, at Sharon Presbyterian Church, 5201 Sharon Road, Charlotte, NC 28210 at 3PM. Visitation will proceed the service from 2-3PM in the church narthex. A private interment will follow immediately at Sharon Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the charity of your choice in Max's name. What a shock to learn of my very good Presbyterian College buddy had died. We only saw each other at the PC football games.each year, sitting only a few seats apart. You would have thought we were still in college the way we talked back and forth.- talking about how old the other was getting. I have only known about this a few minutes and I already miss him. To his family-- I am not telling you any thing you don't know already but Max was great person in many ways. My thoughts and prayers are with you today.

Max and my Dad (Jack Herndon) were great friends when Max moved back to Grover. They both grew up there and had much in common. Thoughts and prayers to all the family.

We were saddened to learn of Mac's passing. I had the pleasure of spending many happy fun filled times with Max and Robert Roper talking and brain storming HOT RODS, Max loved his cars and loved to talk cars. Another Rodder gone, he shall be missed

Unfortunately, I never got to know Max that well but was a colleague at BellSouth for 10 years. I have had the pleasure of socializing with Max at numerous Christmas luncheons for past and present BellSouth employees which I have enjoyed. Everyone liked Max and he will be missed. My sympathies go out to his family.
