William Payne Obituary
January 24, 1946 - March 5, 2024
Fort Mill, South Carolina - William M. "Bill" Payne, 78, of Fort Mill, South Carolina, passed away on March 5, 2024, in Charlotte, North Carolina after a brief and valiant battle with cancer.
Bill was described by everyone that knew him as a bundle of energy ,and was always on the go. He lived life in 'the fast lane,' loved adventure, and adding new friends to his circle of loved ones.
Bill was a proud member of the Ware Shoals High School marching band, and attended Clemson University before graduating from Georgia State University. After college, he lived in Dallas, TX and Atlanta, GA before starting a forklift tire business in Charlotte, NC in 1974. In 2002, he pivoted to a new venture in the limousine service industry, which took him all over the southeast. As the proud owner of American Limousine, he was able to forge close relationships with many repeat clients, and especially loved introducing people to the beautiful vineyards of NC on his custom wine tours.
Bill was a member of SouthPark Church, formerly known as Sharon UMC, since 1986. He had a lifelong passion for automobiles, and competed for several years in the Sports Car Club of America, ultimately attaining a second place at the Runoffs, before hanging up his driving gloves.
He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Sara S. Payne, son Patrick (Katja) Payne, brother G. Fred (Kay) Payne, nephews John (Jane) Payne, Mark (Jessica) Payne, and niece Janet (Mac) Payne Summers. He was preceded in death by his father Fred N. Payne, and mother, Lota G. Payne.
The family is grateful to all who reached out during his brief illness to offer support and share wonderful memories. Those kindnesses will never be forgotten.
A memorial service to celebrate Bill's life will be held at SouthPark Church, 3151 Apex Dr., Charlotte, NC 28211, on Sunday, March 17, 2024. Visitation will take place from 11:15am to 12:00pm, followed by the Memorial Service at 12:00pm. A reception will be held at the church immediately after the service.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to SouthPark Church and The Levine & Dickson Hospice House at Southminster who provided exceptional and loving care for Bill in his last days.
