Eli Kahn Obituary

Rabbi Eli J. Kahn died peacefully in his bed on Shabbat morning, Feb. 16, 2002, after a long illness. Rabbi Kahn, born in 1915 in Lithuania, migrated with his family to Chicago in 1927. He returned to Lithuania to study at Telshe Yeshiva, but was forced to flee during the 1930's. He completed his rabbinical degree at Skokie's Hebrew Theological College and later a doctorate there also. He devoted the rest of his life to his congregants and to Judaism. The congregation dearest to his heart was his first pulpit, Indian Harbor's B'nai Israel Synagogue. He also served as Rabbi at St. Paul's Sons of Jacob Synagogue, as Chaplin at the Mayo Clinic and at several other synagogues. He will be forever remembered by the hundreds of couples he married and the many people brought closer to Judaism through his warm heart. He is survived by his loving wife of more than 50 years, Lillian; his four children, Judith, Rachelle, Shulamit and David; 15 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Donations may be made to the Hebrew Theological College of Skokie, AMIT and Yeshivas Darchai Torah. Funeral Services were held. Arrangements by the Weinstein Family Services Wilmette Chapel, 847-256-5700.
