Elinor Turbov Obituary

Elinor Turbov, née Joffe, age 97. Beloved wife of the late Joseph. Beloved companion of the late David Cobb Stockwell. Loving mother of Anne (Alan) Kraus and Jane (Mark Stearns). Loving stepmother of Chris Stockwell (Chris Laubach). Proud grandmother of David Kraus (Angelica Cleveland), Susan Gladden (Nickolas) and Aaron Stearns. Proud step-grandmother of Sam Stockwell Laubach and Harley Stockwell Laubach.

Elinor obtained a BA in Speech and MA in English Literature from Northwestern University. She was a dedicated, creative English teacher for 30 years at Nichols Middle School in Evanston, Illinois, and department head for many years. She touched the lives of her students profoundly. Once retired, she continued to be an active member of her community: contributing to many charities, participating both as an actor and behind the scenes of Winnetka Community Theater, volunteering at the Evanston Hospital gift shop, giving tours as a docent for Chicago Architectural Tours, serving on her condo board, and taking a keen interest in her family and friends. She maintained her sparkling wit and sharp intellect by taking classes at Northwestern University, attending many cultural events, reading voraciously, and traveling extensively.

Services have been held. Interment Rosehill Cemetery, Chicago. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Doctors Without Borders, Greater Chicago Food Depository, or WFMT. Former student. Just learning of her passing -- I remember her so fondly. She was such an inspiration. Strong and full of spirit and heart. And what a singer! Thank you for all you gave us back in the day!

Mrs. Turbov was one of my all time favorite teachers! I was touched to see an entry by Lee Sternberg, who was a colleague of Mrs. Turbov, and another remarkable teacher at Nichols Middle School, where I was an A Team student from 1974 to 1977. I am not surprised they were good friends, and I loved them both dearly!
I am eternally grateful for these remarkable teachers who cultivated in me a deep love of writing and reading, and encouraged my interest and abilities. I was thrilled to have such outstanding teachers who nurtured my love of the language arts, and recognized my potential and development. I still adore writing and reading, and credit these two teachers for setting my feet on those paths. In fact, I chose to become a teacher as well, and thought of them often throughout my own teaching career. I will forever hold these women in the highest esteem, and will never forget how masterful they were at their craft. It's been 46 years since I left Nichols, and Mrs. Turbov and Mrs. Sternberg remain strong in my heart and memory today, and always will!!!!

Elinor was one of the blessings of my life for the past fifty years. Her positive energy and fondness has added much joy to our own lives. She will be missed.
