DAVID JOYNER HAYNES

WAYNESVILLE - David Joyner Haynes, 73, passed away peacefully on April 10, 2013.

A native of Haywood County, David was born on August 22, 1939. He was the son of the late Edwin and Bonnie Haynes of Canton, NC. His brother, Thomas E. Haynes, passed away in 1999.

David attended Canton High School, graduated with an AA degree from Mars Hill College in 1958, attended Rollins College in Winter Park, FL, for his junior year, and earned his LLB from Wake Forest College Law School in 1962.

After graduating from law school, David joined the Navy and was the JAG officer at Litchfield Park, AZ, and Kodiak, AK. While in Alaska, David enjoyed hunting and earned the name Issumatark Nanook after crossing the Arctic Circle. Upon his return to Haywood County in 1967, he briefly worked at his father's insurance agency before joining the law firm of Morgan, Ward, and Brown, which later became the firm of Brown, Ward, and Haynes. For over 40 years, David had a distinguished career, specializing in real estate law.

David was an avid student of African art, amassed an extensive reference library on the subject, and collected many fine pieces. After his retirement in 2002, David took a great deal of pleasure in riding his Ducati motorcycle. He also was able to pursue his love of reading, spending many hours enjoying the great classics.

David is survived by Dr. Elizabeth L. Haynes, his wife of 23 years; and Janice Haynes, his first wife and the mother of his children. Patrick Lee Haynes, his son, is an entrepreneur located in Dubai, UAE. Meredith Robyn Haynes, his daughter, is a medical doctor in Medellin, Colombia; she is married to Edgar Restrepo, also an entrepreneur. His eldest son, Albert "Mac" McCracken Haynes, passed away in 2002. In addition to his immediate family, David is also survived by his cousins, Peggy (Bruce) Briggs, Waynesville, Mary Frances Gray, Charlotte, Albert (Polly) McCracken, Jr, Granite Quarry, Thad (Barbara) Mills, Bellevue, WA, Rachel (Tom) Reagan, Ooltewah, TN, Lynn Smith, Raleigh, and Evelyn Sutton, Waynesville.
