Fuller Adams Shuford M. D.

Fuller D. Obituary

Fuller Adams Shuford, M.D.

Asheville - Fuller Adams Shuford M.D. of Asheville died peacefully at his home Friday, July 6, 2012. A lifelong resident of Buncombe County, he was the son of the late Daphne Brown and George Adams Shuford. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Elizabeth Shuford Briggs.

Dr. Fuller attended schools in Asheville, the University of North Carolina for undergraduate studies and medical school and served his residency at Emory University Hospital.

His ambition had always been to be a surgeon, but he contracted polio at age 7 and his paralysis prevented that career. He became a gastroenterologist and gifted diagnostician, practicing for many years with Asheville Gastroenterology Associates. Following his retirement, he served as doctor at Deerfield Episcopal Retirement Community.

In later years, he was afflicted with post polio syndrome and despite its painful and debilitating effects, he remained until his dying day, one of the most cheerful, uplifting human beings possible. His very rare spirit and loving generosity will be missed.

His survivors include his daughter, Katherine Shuford Ver Steeg and her husband Jon and their three children; his sons Roger Jordan and George Fuller Shuford; his brother Sydney Herbert Shuford and his wife Sheila and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was a lifelong member of Trinity Episcopal Church, where a service to celebrate his life will be held 11:00 AM, Wednesday, July 11, 2012 with the Revs. Carol Hubbard and Ham Fuller officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in Tuton Hall. Private interment will be held in Trinity Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to the Shuford Memorial Garden at Trinity Episcopal Church, 6o Church St. Asheville NC 28801, or the Deerfield Residency Fund, 1617 Hendersonville Rd. Asheville NC 28803.

Morris Funeral Home, 304 Merrimon Avenue is in charge of arrangements. Condolences may be sent through the website www.morrisfamilyfuneralhome.com.
