Tony Brooks Obituary

Tony Brooks

Jackson

Alter Anthony Brooks (Tony), 57, beloved husband, father, brother and son, passed away on September 30, 2013 of natural causes while on a business trip in Baltimore, Maryland. Visitation will be held Thursday October 3, 2013 at First Baptist Church of Jackson from 10:00 am until 1:00 pm. The funeral service will follow at 1:30 pm, with the burial directly after at Lakewood Memorial Park.

Tony was born on October 21, 1955 in Atlanta, GA and was raised in Greenville, SC. He relocated to Jackson, MS in 1974 to attend Belhaven University, where he met and married the love of his life, Sandy, whom he would have celebrated 36 years of marriage in December. Tony worked at Deposit Guaranty for 18 years before moving to Horne LLP in 2003 where he was honored and proud to be a Partner and Director of IT Assurance and Risk Services. More than anything, he loved spending time with his wife and daughters - and would take any chance he could to brag about their accomplishments. Tony was fortunate enough to run broadcast sound each Sunday with an amazing crew at First Baptist Jackson for over 35 years. He enjoyed photography, playing with his "grand-pups", and weekly tennis with his buddies at River Hills. Tony's infectious smile and positive attitude will surely be missed by everyone that he touched with his life.

Tony is survived by his wife, Sandra Speed Brooks of Jackson; his daughters, Lauren Brooks Ritchie and husband Rob Ritchie from Bogalusa, LA, and Lindsey Elizabeth Brooks and fiancé, Ryan Bell of Jackson, MS; his parents, Alter and Gloria Brooks of Greenville, SC.; his sister, Sonya Brooks of Greenville, SC.; and his brother-in-law, John Speed and wife, Diana, of Crystal Springs, MS.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to the First Baptist Jackson Music Ministry, Summit Counseling Mission at First Baptist Church Jackson, and the Junior Diabetes Research Foundation.

Not sure what to say?

January 9, 2015

Truthfully I last saw or talked with Tony back in the early 80's when I supported Tony as a sales rep for AT&T. I have lived the past 25 years in Minnesota and just recently returned south living now in the Birmingham area. I was going to drive over to Jackson next week and was trying to look Tony up via Linked In to try and re-connect. I was shocked and saddened to discover such tragic news. Tony is someone I have always loved as a friend and role model because he was always so incredibly positive and so incredibly unselfish.. I knew if I contacted him, all those years would fade away and he would embrace me as if it were still 1983. He was just that kind of guy. I have so many positive memories of working with Tony. He was truly a special human being. I am truly heart broken for your loss.

Dear Sandy, Lindsey, and Lauren,

It was my honor to know Tony. Our agency contracted with Horne for auditing services and Tony took amazing care of us. My co-worker and I (both of us recently engaged) had dinner with Tony and he talked for a solid hour about how much he adores you Sandy and how he 'knew you were the one' from that first moment, how walking Lauren down the aisle was the "proudest moment" of his life, and how much he was looking forward to walking Lindsey down the aisle someday soon. My heart breaks for you all. I'm so sorry that he passed much too soon. Lindsey, I hope you know that he will be there with you on your special day. All of us who ever met Tony will carry his bright memory in our hearts.

Wishing you peace and comfort during this difficult time.

I had a business lunch with Tony one time about 8 years ago. I never met him again. I was very impressed with Tony's brilliance during this meeting. He was the type person you would always remember although it was just one meeting. From reading about his life I am so impressed with the wonderful things he did with his Family, Work Family, Church and Friends. Although I do not know Tony's Family I have kept them in my Prayers. I am sure it is safe to say that Tony was a truly remarkable person and his Family is a very special group of people that will cherish his Love and always celebrate the wonderful Life that Tony lived. I feel his spirit uplifting those he touched in his life everyday!

I had the distinct privilege to work directly with Tony at First Baptist Church from 1986 -1995 .
Tony would always say encouraging words to me as I got ready to play my oboe during both services at FBCJ .
He would never say an unkind word to me as we were getting the sound "tweaked" for the service .
Getting to work with Tony each week was one of the highlights of my musical career while a member there .
I know that he is now "tweaking" the audio in Heaven for our Lord and Saviour , Jesus Christ

Sandy, Lauren, and Lindsey, I had the great pleasure of working with Tony over the past 8 years, and it was definitely a pleasure. He was such a gifted man and will be missed very much by everyone who knew him. I am grateful for the opportunity I had recently to thank him for his gift of encouragement. He, as he so often did, offered appreciation for something I had done. I told him I wanted to take the opportunity to share with him that I recognized his God-given talent of encouragement and how much I appreciated his positive influence in my life.
That's how I will always remember Tony - positive, smiling, encouraging. His faith was apparent as was his love for his family and his fellow mankind. I will be praying for all of you during this time - for comfort and peace. God bless you all.

It was a genuine pleasure to have known Tony for so many years and I was so shocked at his untimely death. Due to his "job" at church where he was tucked away in an audio control room, I didn't see him very often but just recently our paths crossed and I was overjoyed to visit with him a few moments. My sincere condolences to Sandy and the girls. We have been lifting you up often.

Tony was such an amazing guy. I first met him when he joined Horne Technology Group in 2003 and we worked together side by side. I was sad when he moved to a different department but he always gave me a hug whenever he saw me. He loved his wife and daughters so much. He talked about you guys all the time. Such a wonderful, genuinely kind soul. The world just lost a very special person. My deepest sympathies for his family.

I first met Tony more than 30 years ago, and interacted with him professionally at BellSouth, at Deposit Guaranty, at Horne and, especially, at church. He never failed to be witty and spontaneous and was one of the friendliest people I knew. He was extremely talented and gave freely of his talents to his church. He'll be missed.

Dearest Sandy and family, I am grieved to my soul over the home-going of Tony. I was in the last year of TurningPoint and in just the few weeks he was with us that year grew to love him and know him just a little. What a joy it was to get reacquainted a few weeks ago at the reunion. He still had that glorious smile and gracious personality. My prayers are with all of you as you cherish the years you had together. God bless you.

My friendship with Tony Brooks is deep in my heart. . . so many years that we shared together, at work, at church, and with family & friends. And with every single moment I had the privilege of spending with Tony, I saw a true example of a Christian husband, father, and friend. Contagiously positive and the kind of person you miss when he is not in the room. Our world is suffering a great loss with Tony's passing. Twyla and I extend our greatest sympathy to Sandy, Lauren, and Lindsey. Know how much we love your family and will be thinking of you and praying for you.
