RICHARD RUGGLES Obituary

RUGGLES RICHARD LOUNSBURY RUGGLES, M.D. Born September 7, 1919, in Cleveland, OH. Died January 20, 2013, in Chagrin Falls, OH. Preceded in death by his parents, Charles Lounsbury Ruggles, MD and Phoebe Otto Ruggles. Survived by his wife, Maurine Malster Ruggles, his brother, Robert W. Ruggles and his children, Ann Ruggles, Charles M. Ruggles, Barbara Pasi, Maurine Orndorff (Jeffrey) and Richard M. Ruggles (Kathy McNeely), and his grandchildren, Maurine Pasi (Adam Garnich), Clay Orndorff and Grant Orndorff. Dick Ruggles graduated from Shaw High School, in Cleveland, Oberlin College and Western Reserve Medical School. He met his wife, Maurine at Lakeside Hospital, where he was working as a doctor and she as a nurse. They married in 1944 and would have celebrated their 69th wedding anniversary on January 29, 2013. He served in the U.S. Army in the medical corps, in Okinawa, just after the end of World War II, where he treated war injuries and set up an ear, nose and throat (ENT) clinic to gain experience in his area of special interest. His great-great-grandfather, Almon Ruggles came to Ohio with Moses Cleaveland at the turn of the 19th century, and surveyed the Firelands of the Western Reserve to open the territory up to settlement. Dr. Ruggles was an innovator in the treatment of deafness. He added treatment of allergies to his practice, when few ENTs of the day saw a connection between allergies and ENT health. He was well known and respected as a teacher and healer in the Cleveland area. He practiced at Saint Luke's hospital and Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, for more than fifty years. He played the oboe and the pipe organ, and enjoyed bicycle riding, water skiing, sailing, scuba diving and being with his family. He was a long-time member of Fairmount Presbyterian Church, until his move to Chagrin Falls. He was a member of the Triological Society, the Deafness Research Foundation, and the American Guild of Organists. A memorial service, at 3:30 p.m. and a reception immediately following will be held on January 26th, 2013, at South Franklin Circle, 16575 South Franklin St., Chagrin Falls OH 44023. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Hearing Health Foundation (formerly Deafness Research Foundation) 363 Seventh Ave., 10th floor, New York, NY 10001-3904, or Crossroads Hospice, 9775 Rockside Rd., Suite 270, Valley View, OH 44125.

The best neighbor, friend and doctor that anyone could imagine. A truly great man, for all the right reasons: highly intelligent, compassionate, creative...the list of adjectives could go on for quite a while. But they would still be inadequate to describe his unique and wonderful spirit, which will live on in our hearts forever. His passing is the end of an era.
